what extent are the following thoughts shared by the younger generation ?
Standing first in a line of two at the post office immediately ahead of a women judged to be in her late forties who was in turn followed by another women who later admitted to Eighty Three a conversation started about how few clerks were on hand to give service. As this fact was bounced around the 83 year old shifted the conjecture about the post office staff to complain about the coming purported Obama caused rise in the Medicare premium and that she couldn’t pay $ 300 per month Obama being the target. According to reports indicating the large percent of retired seniors who now live on Medicare alone and the additional cost of Medigap insurance I nodded agreement and remarked “ Well the Social Security checks are still coming out on time.” The 45+ gal with disgust in her voice snapped “ Yes they are and
we (indicating her age group workers)are paying for that” !
Uncharacteristically (for Me) I said nothing, wished them a good day took care of my business and returned home thinking (rather angrily) If this is the prevailing thought of the younger generation it certainly bolsters the case for an increase in abortions. What kind of society have we developed ?
More rationally I wondered if the thought had entered old 40+s mind in respect to the costs by parents of raising her from birth to post college age ? One very low estimate was $ 250,000 for one child.
This means each child has received (on the average) $ 250,000 from his/her parent as a cost to raise them over 21 years.
The average monthly payment from Social Security is $ 1,100 per month
The average life expectancy is 77.9 years
Retiring at age 65 would mean approx payments for 13 years for a grand total of $ 171,600
The retiree of course would have paid premiums for virtually all their lives “Not their children”! The children are paying for their own retirement. Not for their parents.
Each child therefore owes on the average their parent $ 78,400 X the number of children in the family.
One day we will be able to determine the nature of an unborn fetus and should they be lacking support for their parents further development of the fetus will be halted. Medicine has extended lives to the extent the original actuarial calculations are out of date and need adjustment.
The concept is vital under our current Capitalistic system.
As we extend life now it simply seems to mean more time in a nursing home ! ☺
OK Daddy and Mommy “Pack your things”
OK Sunny “By the way my will gives everything to the local lady of the night” ☺ We were married last week !
