Government sued for grant to faith-based group

Quote:
Counseling center under attack for using federal grant
By The Associated Press

TACOMA — Thirteen residents of Western Washington have sued the federal government and a Vancouver, Wash.-based marriage counseling center, saying it has used federal money to promote a fundamentalist Christian agenda.

The Northwest Marriage Institute received $97,750 last year from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under the Bush administration's initiatives to support faith-based organizations, according to the lawsuit, filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Tacoma.

The organization used the money to promote its Bible-based marriage counseling, in violation of the separation of church and state called for by the First Amendment, the lawsuit says.

On its Web site, the Marriage Institute quotes several Bible verses, including one that urges wives to win over their husbands with a "quiet spirit." It also says wives should serve their husbands and make them happy as a way of honoring God.

The plaintiffs, represented by Washington, D.C.-based Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said in the lawsuit they were offended by federal tax money being used to support the organization.

"This program trains people in how to make their marriages conform to one narrow interpretation of faith," the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United, said in a news release. "The federal government has no business forcing the taxpayer to subsidize that."

Bob Whiddon Jr., the Marriage Institute's director, said Tuesday he had not seen the lawsuit and could not comment, but said his organization has followed rules for spending the grant money.

(bolded emphasis mine)

So, is this what fundamentalist Christian marriage counseling is all about? Wives should shut their traps and make their husbands happy - to serve God. OK, fine - but I don't want my tax dollars being spent on that.

I hope they're forced to pay every penny back, plus interest.

Take the Northwest Marriage Institutes' Marriage Quiz:
http://www.northwestmarriage.org/cgi...hemarriagequiz
(I didn't take the quiz - it looks like you have to give your email address to get the results)

Here are some of the religious-based questions from the quiz (I have no idea what the proper answers would be):

2: According to the Bible, what is the underlying cause of EVERY problem in marriage?
-Lack of communication
-Lack of faith in God
-Selfishness
-Lack of submission or failure to submit

7: The biblical prescription to avoid lust (pornography, etc.) is:
-Pursue sex with one’s own wife
-Build a relationship with one’s own wife
-Lust after one’s own wife
-Lust, even if one lusts after a woman other than his own wife, must only be satisfied with one’s own wife.

18: When the Bible says that the “husband is the head of the wife” it means:
-The husband always has the final say on all matters
-The husband is in a position of honor above the wife
-The husband’s behavior is the model for the wife’s behavior. In other words, husbands are required to “go first” or do what is good, beneficial, and necessary first.
-None of the above

--------------------------
Again, I don't know the answers to some of these questions. I'm sure they'd like to enlighten me, though. I'm dying to know the answer to #18.

Re: Government sued for grant to faith-based group

I heard about this on the radio yesterday. I wish I could say it was unbelievable or shocking, but the reality is that it was just inevitable. Bush's whole faith-based initiative is near the top of my list of his (and the legislative branch's) most stupendous fuck ups. I see the whole program as heinous violation of the religious freedom granted by the Constitution. I applaud the fact that some members of the religious community still seem to uphold the idea of keeping church and state separate.

18. (The correct answer was The husband’s behavior is the model for the wife’s behavior. In other words, husbands are required to “go first” or do what is good, beneficial, and necessary first.)

The other correct answers seemed also to be on the sensible side.

At least when I tried to choose the most wacky choise there was I didn't grade very well.

I hope this is a sign of more to come.

I hope so too. We'll see. A court decision that supports separation of church and state could end up having some pretty far-reaching effects.
