Well far be it from to stop the party here! I agree with you all, this bill does suck, it doesn't give the President nearly enough power to fight this war and it is indeed disgraceful!

Incredible, never in my life have i seen a thread like this!
You agree with Bush then, that he should be a dictator. Listen in.

Because the ability to torture legal residents indefinitely in secret prisons because you think they are suspicious is a near-Kingly power.

Edit: But seriously, do you honestly not have a problem with torturing people secretly JUST because they were thought to be suspicious by a leader who also thought Iraq had WMDs and invaded?

Yeah, Bush is just going to go around and round up people at random, send them to the gulag in Moscow, and pull their fingernails out because he thinks he has Divine Right.

Meanwhile, Al-Qaeda is sawing off heads.

Yeah, because Bush didn't invade a country and occupy it with tens of thousands dead as a result because he wrongfully thought they still had working WMDs. He also didn't wrongfully assume it would decrease terrorism. He also didn't wrongfully assume it would make the people more free. He also didn't wrongfully assume it would decrease torture.

I didn't support the Iraq invasion. And you are comparing apples and oranges.

You're right. Tens of thousands dead would actually require more proof of WMDs, and he still went ahead. He probably wouldn't even look for evidence when throwing individual people into secret torture chambers.

I agree. Why are you debating me on Iraq when we have the same opinion?

That's a conclusion you are drawing with no evidence to support it.

Actually, I'm pointing out that the conclusion you made:

Quote:

(that Bush would wait for concrete evidence before using his power) disagrees with history (Iraq War, for instance).

Leahy is no protector of the Constitution. Few, very few, of the representatives in Congress are.

It's ironic how Karl is still in the white house considering his indictment. I thought Mr "If I only had a brain bush" was going to fire him.

More lies from Bush I suppose.

Re: Patrick Leahy (D) VT on the detainee bill

Karl never did get indicted. Only Scooter Libby, Cheney's chief of staff. But Bush did say he would fire anyone involved in leaking classifed information, oh then he changed it to anyone who broke a law...because sometimes it's not illegal to leak - for example if you didn't know you were leaking classified info. Pretty sweet deal huh? They have to prove you knew. The most important secret there is and the only law I know of where ignorance is a defense.

samintheburgh, what did Leahy do that makes him not a defender of the constitution? As far as I know, Leahy and Feingold are the biggest defenders of the constitution we have!
