Re: Saddam Sentenced to Death

Not upset, more indiffrent. This mans death does nothing to end or even slow the killing in Iraq. If anything, it may heighten it. I'm sorry if I'm not interested in dumb patriotic symbolism right now. There's a raging, horrific civil war happening that we kind of started and it will still be raging the day after Saddam dies.

Re: Saddam Sentenced to Death

The sentence fits the crime, particularly under Islamic law.

Saddam as a martyr? Either execution or imprisonment works equally well for those who want him to be a symbol.

Rot in a dark hole? Never see the light of day? Isn't that torture? Or are these just euphemisms for confinement with meals, exercise, health care and the occasional interview by 60 minutes (whoever) to look into the mind of evil? Evil of course using the soapbox for his own reasons.

I'm not really that concerned with it. This is a trial in Iraq and for Iraq. I just hope it reflects what the people of that country want.

Re: Saddam Sentenced to Death

What troubles me is how many people call for the trial and death of George Bush, a democratically elected leader of a free country, vs the amout of people who are indifferent or upset about the Saddam verdict. Unbelievable.

My post was very democratic personally. My concern is the people of Iraq getting what they want.

Re: Saddam Sentenced to Death

Still, you have many of the same people probably very excepting of what was happening to Milosovec, and then angered or upset about Saddam. They were two of the same.

Stuff like this makes me question you.

To a grunt, they always think about the solders first, just as I did. What reverberates in our minds is the impact on the foot soldier no matter the issue.

There has never been a time when you have ever thought of the troops first, which strikes me as very suspicious.

You are very partisan, which I am also, but to the extent where it doesn't override my concerns for the soldiers.

You don't do that, it's down the partisan line no matter what.

It is obvious that Hussein's execution will entice violence against our troops. Quite suprised it never crossed your mind or you just didn't care. You know what demoralizes the troops? People that think like you, never concerned about the soldier constantly looking over his shoulder as you gloat over events that will wreck more havoc on them.

I'm happy about the verdict, not the sentence.

I'm very suspicious of you.

Re: Saddam Sentenced to Death

This line caught my eye.

Quote:
President Bush called the verdict "a milestone in the Iraqi people's efforts to replace the rule of a tyrant with the rule of law."
Yes, Bush, just like you replaced it with the rule of law when you invaded, increasing terror and torture.

Someone should tell them that bad press can be prevented by not abusing prisoners in the first place. Censorship is only needed to preserve the good reputation of those who have tortured and/or murdered already.

democratically elected leaders of free countries can commit war crimes and crimes against humanity on par with the worst dictator, as george bush and his cabal have demonstrated. i think people are more agast at the level of hypocrisy here than anything else. saddam, a third rate dictator, is sentenced to death by a court created by an occupying army, who commited a crime against humanity by invading the country to begin with. boy, that rich. those who fail to see the irony can keep drinking the milk and eating cookies.

I don't recall saying a democratically elected leader couldn't be tried. But by the logic used there is hardly a leader of any country, state, or province who shouldn't be tried. Should we try them all, since the crimes are on par with Saddam? This is no justification for people not accepting a Saddam verdict done by due process. That is hypocritical.

Re: Saddam Sentenced to Death

Considering it's an American appointed, American financed court, coming in with a verdict and a death sentence perfectly timed for the American elections, and a court that ignores the Iraqi constitution, that gives the President of Iraq, immunity from prosecution for crimes committed during his time in office.
I would imagine there will be plenty of people around the world who will have a problem with this, and not because the love Saddam.
