Doomsday clock moves forward by two minutes

OK, I wasn't sure which section to put this in. It's breaking news, but not pure politics - if it's in the wrong section, then it can be moved to the right one by the mods ...

Anyway, this is regarding the Doomsday clock being moved forward by two minutes.

Nuclear, climate perils push Doomsday Clock ahead - Yahoo! News

Quote:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The scientists who mind the Doomsday Clock moved it two minutes closer to midnight on Wednesday -- symbolizing the annihilation of civilization and adding the perils of global warming for the first time.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which created the Doomsday Clock in 1947 to warn the world of the dangers of nuclear weapons, advanced the clock to five minutes until midnight. It was the first adjustment of the clock since 2002.

"We stand at the brink of a second nuclear age," the bulletin's board of directors said in a statement
Nuclear bombs/proliferation and global warming/the human attitude towards it are two major concerns according to the article.

Quote:
Physicist Lawrence Krauss of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland said if humankind fails to change course on global warming, "there's a great possibility that the Earth in the year 2100 will only dimly resemble our planet today -- and as it has existed over the past 500,000 years."

The bulletin's scientists moved the clock two minutes forward in 2002, to seven minutes until midnight, following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

The bulletin was founded in 1945 by University of Chicago scientists who had worked on developing the first nuclear bomb, and it is now overseen by some of the world's most prominent scientists.

The bulletin created the clock in 1947, two years after the United States ushered in the nuclear age by dropping atomic bombs on two Japanese cities at the end of World War Two, to symbolize the urgent nuclear dangers confronting the world.

It now stands at the closest to midnight since 1984, when it was three minutes to midnight amid a deepening Cold War.

Re: Doomsday clock moves forward by two minutes

I have a problem with this part of the article: “The scientists who mind the Doomsday Clock moved it two minutes closer to midnight on Wednesday -- symbolizing the annihilation of civilization and adding the perils of global warming for the first time.”

I really don’t think scientists like this (Sandal wearing ten speed riding Nam era global warming alarmists.) are skilled in such areas as wisdoms and levelheaded political knowledge to foresee things in the real world.
There political views are to restricted.

(OT: Now there’s a job. The news is showing a lineman working on high power lines in the mountains from a helicopter. I bet that beats a cubical…)

Perhaps the reason they just added the 'perils of global warming' part is because global warming is now getting so serious that something needs to be done pronto ...

Re: Doomsday clock moves forward by two minutes

Or because they weren't getting that much media coverage of late, and added a politically-correct catch phrase to get some limelight back.

Yeah, I am pretty cynical.

First, let me say that I don't see Stephan Hawking doing very much ten-speed riding or wearing sandals very often.

Second, the politicization of scientific data has become a disturbing trend amongst officials. Ignore the physical and scientific possibilities by making sure that it doesn't upset anyone's politics or conflict with official doctrine. It doesn't take a political mastermind to understand that the spread of even more atomic weapons threatens the survival of the human species. The same thing can be said for global warming. What I find troubling is your, and many other people's, insistence that scientist temper their findings to make sure they fit into acceptable political attitudes.

Sincerely Yours,
C.David Neely

Yeah, I buy it. I don't think anyone doubts nuclear proliferation, and there's such a mountain of evidence for global warming that people who deny it's happening are doing so either for political reasons or for head-in-the-sand reasons. Nuclear, and the world changes dramatically and suddenly; global warming, and the world changes dramatically and not-so-suddenly. Either way, the planet is changed, and not for the better.

Yes, adding "global warming" to the Doomsday Clock gets them more press coverage. But that doesn't mean it isn't completely legitimate to add something to the clock that over time could have similar results for the planet that a nuclear war could have.

Just a couple of weeks ago it was reported - Ancient ice shelf breaks free from Canadian Arctic - that "A giant ice shelf the size of 11,000 football fields has snapped free from Canada's Arctic, scientists said."

Quote:
Warwick Vincent of Laval University, who studies Arctic conditions, traveled to the newly formed ice island and could not believe what he saw.

"This is a dramatic and disturbing event. It shows that we are losing remarkable features of the Canadian North that have been in place for many thousands of years. We are crossing climate thresholds, and these may signal the onset of accelerated change ahead," Vincent said Thursday.

Re: Doomsday clock moves forward by two minutes

They should have had the clock on "survivor" or "24" - then people would pay attention to it.

There is absolutely no evidence that humans have anything to with global warming. I watched a show on the science channel the other night that basically said the sun is getting hotter which is the primary reason the earths temp is increasing. Again anyone who says humans are causing this natural phenomina is doing so for purely political purposes.

Different theories abound, but it does seem to be true that humans are causing global warming.

BBC NEWS | World | Americas | Humans cause global warming, US admits - apparently the US government also says so, and there is a ton of other links supporting this fact ...

I agree with you , Curly ... plus then theres the polar bear issue - the polar bears are being threatened now due to global warming.

It's a serious issue - and like you said, just because it gets them more press coverage doesnt mean it's not necessarily a serious issue.

While I agree that global warming exists, I am not convinced that humans are the cause and notion that it is getting "so serious that something needs to be done" is unsubstantiated speculation and akin to crying wolf, in my opinion.

Aside from that, the Dooms Day Clock is just symbolic, nothing more. It's been close many times in the past.
