This is sickening as much as it is infuriating!!!

Yep, I saw that on CNN, but the story there is that he was fired. Maybe we will yet learn which way it was.

So the guy who heads the branch of service that runs Walter Reed steps down, after a public outcry demanding somebody's head, and it's infuriating?

I am not referring to Francis..I am referring to the situation.
That people who put their lives on the line in service for their country are so easily dismissed once their usable service has expired...it is sickening that they are so easily discarded.

Yet another REAL issue that is lost in partisan dueling and a media more interested in viewership, and a clueless public more interested in MTV than the world around them.

Iam, I think we all agree that it is a disgrace regardless of where we stand politically . Where do you want to go from here?

We can look at how and why the buildings were neglected, how this will further hurt the troops morale in theatre, or whatever other angle you would like to discuss.

If you simply want people to comment on the situation, however, I think this will be a quick thread as I think we are all as sickened by this as you are.

I've been around since "Buy American" meant "Made in the USA".

What I do not understand is why these "out patients" are not sent home to recover while their service cases are adjudicated (normally takes 18 months).

I often think about just that.
Is it because if the wounded were sent home to get medical treatment, the public would see - first hand the cost of the war?
Reading about casualties in a newspaper is a far cry from going to see the doctor and running into soldiers with missing body parts, eh?

No actually this was the policy applied in the late 1960's and early 1970's we would go to a local VA center for some occasional treatments and received scripts in mail.

Wow - you caught me by surprise..cool a real discussion...

Well - for one, it seems the right things have happened here...the people directly responsible have been fired/forced to resign...not promoted, re-assigned or allowed to retire with full benefits...a disgrace has taken place, therefore those responsible should be disgraced.
This will go a long way in helping to deal with troop morale - at least they will see that the superiors that allowed the place to fall into such condition have been severely punished.

Second...is to admit that we have failed. Failed in leadership, failed in military command, and finally as a nation where everyone is so caught up in the next sit-com that we didn't even know this was happening.

Third...there should be praise to the media outlet that brought this to light.

Fourth...just how many of these places are there? I for one would GLADLY have our tax dollars go to building new, modern facilities wit the very best equipment possible...hell I would GLADLY donate a considerable sum of my own money if it would help.

I'm not sure how much of a discussion this will turn into because I pretty much agree with you on all 4 points.

Do you think there will be more people fired/resigning as a result?

I'm hoping that this was the only location affected; perhaps we'll learn more in the next while as I'm sure there will be thorough inspections going on at every other facility of this kind. I just wonder if we'll find out about them.
