Re: Republicans Call For Gonzales' Resignation
While that's very true, Goober, I don't think that they KNOW any decent upstanding people. They are--each and every one!--liars, greedweasels, thieves and perverts. "Principled Republican" has now become an oxymoron...

Re: Republicans Call For Gonzales' Resignation
So there's no crime and all this is just a "silly little manufactured kerfluffle," eh?
Then could one of you Kool-Aid Kids tell me why Justice Departmant aide Monica Goodling is going to take the Fifth Amendment rather than testify? Somebody's scared spitless of committing perjury, methinks...

Re: Republicans Call For Gonzales' Resignation
You mean people like Robert Fiske, the original Whitewater Special prosecutor, the one who, after a couple of months investigation, said there was no evidence of any wrongdoing on the part of the Clintons. Only to be replaced by partisan hack Ken Starr, who spent 70 million dollars proving that there was no wrongdoing on the part of the Clintons.

Re: Republicans Call For Gonzales' Resignation
Well, it looked today like Alberto Gonzales couldn't stand the heat...so he bolted out of the kitchen! The beleaguered Attorney General headed for the hills this afternoon, cutting short a press conference at the Dirksen US courthouse about Internet safety when reporters started asking him hard questions about the US attorneys he illegally conspired to fire.
Can you say "guilty as sin?"

The president can fire a US attorney because he doesn't like the color of his tie, the president looks like an idiot, but it's not illegal. But a US Attorney cannot ignore a crime just because it's a Republican who committed it, and he can't use the Justice Department to smear Democratic candidates. That's illegal, and the people who arranged it would all involved in a criminal conspiracy. Maybe the illegal stuff this aide is afraid to reveal doesn't have to do with the 8 US Attorneys who got fired.

Re: Republicans Call For Gonzales' Resignation
Precisely correct, Goober!
We are, of course, not certain of the reasons behind Monica Goodling's decision to plead the Fifth, but coming as it does in the midst of a veritable cyclone of improprieties, the worst possible scenario is being envisioned. It's just human nature to do so. The motive for the firings is starting to emerge as STRICTLY political, however different the circumstances might be in each individual case. US prosecutor Carol Lam had apparently connected the Randy "Duke" Cunningham case DIRECTLY to the Office of the Vice President. That, my friend, is your classic smoking gun. And, as you so succinctly note, the probes of Democrats as opposed to the number of investigations of unclean Republicans is not even roughly comparable. The firings themselves, while unusual, were NOT illegal...but they were indicative of something much deeper and more sinister. I cannot escape the feeling that we've STILL only scratched the surface here. (And, by the way, I am in awe of your avatar...)

Re: Republicans Call For Gonzales' Resignation
Is there anybody out there who STILL thinks the Attorney General might get out with his skin?
If so, I've got a hot flash for you. WorldNetDaily, a news-gathering site for hysterical wingtard rod swallowers of the far right, has put up an article--a WND exclusive, mind you!--accusing him of covering up the serial sexual abuse of minor boys at the Texas Youth Commission. Sweet suffering succotash. He is now toast. Officially. And if he ever had any chance to land on his feet and dance off into the private sector at an obscenely huge salary, it's gone now. I'll bet this is just about the least fun ol' Gonzo has EVER had...and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy!
