Goodling Gets Gone!

As the US attorney purge, or Gonzalesgate, comes to a full rolling boil, Ms. Monica Goodling, scared spitless of the big bad Democrats, handed in her resignation. It was a terse three sentences long.

I'm not sure whether or not this will excuse her from answering questions in the Senate, but she's headed for the hills. The more I read about this, the more puzzled I become about how these people can be lawyers and yet remain so utterly ignorant of the law? Given that her attendence in Congress was requested--although NOT subpeonaed--at least a week ago, and she was, in fact, STILL a prime mover in the purge, does she get a free pass just by quitting?

Curiouser and curiouser...

As I intimated in my post entitled Goodling Gets Gone, her resignation does NOT necessarily remove her from Congressional scrutiny. Looks as though Rep. John Conyers would very much like to have some words with Ms. Monica and I'm willing to bet cash that he'll get his way.

Goodling's resignation also comes amid signs of sinking morale in some U.S. attorney's offices. In Minneapolis, three top managers staged a revolt Thursday, choosing to demote themselves rather than work for the newly confirmed U.S. attorney there, who is a former Gonzales aide, officials said. The department was so alarmed that it sent a Washington-based Justice official to Minneapolis this week to try to talk the three out of their plans, officials said.

The discontent in Minnesota centers on U.S. Attorney Rachel K. Paulose, 34, who previously worked for Gonzales and his deputy, McNulty. She is part of a wave of more than a dozen Bush administration insiders appointed as federal prosecutors over the past two years, according to government records.

A dozen bush insiders appointed over the last two years? If they were recess appointments, weren't they supposed to expire at the end of the last Senate's session? If not, did the republican senate just rubber stamp confirm them without checking their credentials?

Not at the White House end of Pennsylvania Avenue. You may notice that Beelzebub Cheney is STILL insisting on a Saddam/ bin Laden connection...even after the 9/11 Commission, the Senate and now the Pentagon have officially repudiated such nonsense.

The purge of the prosecutors took place under a tricky loophole inserted into the Patriot Act by the then GOP Congress for just such an occasion. (This is part of what makes them so odious and what initially called attention to them.) They were NOT recess appointments; they were strictly partisan political moves to jockey for advantage.
