And do you think Pat Leahy is coing to sit still for this bait-and-switch?
You mean the Whitehouse offered this, right?

Don't scare me like that ! I thought the House lost it's mind(s).

Re: Republicans Call For Gonzales' Resignation

It appears that Congress is NOT going to stand for the snow job offered by the White House.

Quote:
House Panel Authorizes Subpoenas for Top Bush Aides
By CARL HULSE and SHERYL GAY STOLBERG
March 21, 2007

A House Judiciary subcommittee today authorized subpoenas for Karl Rove, President Bush’s political adviser, and other senior White House officials in the investigation into the firing of eight United States attorneys.

...snip

Under growing political pressure, the White House had offered to allow private interviews with Mr. Rove, Harriet E. Miers, the former White House counsel; and two other officials. It also offered to provide access to e-mail messages and other communications about the dismissals, but not those between White House officials.

Democrats promptly rejected the offer, which specified that the officials would not testify under oath, that there would be no transcript and that Congress would not subsequently subpoena them.

...snip

In the Senate, lawmakers responded to the furor over the firings on Tuesday by voting overwhelmingly to revoke the authority they had granted the administration last year under the USA Patriot Act to install federal prosecutors indefinitely without Senate confirmation.

...snip

Well, Stripey. NOTHING'S for sure until it happens. The House Committee just voted on subpoenas for all the presidential aides...and that means Rove, Miers and whoever else. (Exactly the right strategy, too, I might add; calling their bluff.)

The plain truth is that seeing ol' Turdblossom under oath would be better than Christmas. And seeing him on the run from a "Contempt of Congress" charge would be pretty good too.

Sorry about that, Samantha; I was just thinking faster than I was typing. Yes, it was the White House.

Most analysis I've read say a political compromise will be reached and Rove will be protected. Gonzales is eventually toast no matter what happens as he tried to bypass congress after promising not to, under orders or not.

Re: Republicans Call For Gonzales' Resignation

The emails are all from October 2006 or earlier, back when the GOP was operating under the "Permanent Majority Illusion", without a care in the world of ever getting a subpoena.
They are still acting like they are in charge, but Congress is Democratic now, and the subpoenas are flying.

As far as executive privilege goes, Bill Clinton was forced to testify under oath, if you can compel the president to testify in a frivolous lawsuit, then the you can probably compel executive branch employees to testify concerning areas of legitimate concern before Congress.

I wonder what's on those 18 days of missing emails?

See Tony Snow sidestep the question.

Think Progress » Snow Won’t Comment On 18-Day Gap: ‘I’ve Been Led To Believe There’s A Good Response For It’

Transcript

Quote:
HENRY: You keep saying the Justice Department, the response, the 3,000 pages, unprecedented, it’s very responsive. Why then is these this gap from mid-November to about December 4, right before the actual firings? Why is there a gap in the emails?

SNOW: I don’t know, why don’t you ask them.

HENRY: Well, you’re the White House, the Justice Department serves under…

SNOW: I know, but I’m not going to be the fact witness on Justice.

HENRY: But you’re the one representing that be this has been very responsive. Now when there’s a gap, you say go to them —

SNOW: Yeah, and I’ve been led to believe — I’ve been led to believe that there’s a good response for it, but I’m going to let you ask them because they’re going to have the answer.

HENRY: Now, here’s one email from November 15 that says, from Mr. Simpson to Harriet Miers, “Who will determine whether this requires the president’s attention?” And then there is a gap in emails. Was there any, you think, perhaps any email about the president in there? And did the president have to sign off on this, because the question was raised…

SNOW: The president has no recollection of this ever being raised with him.

[…]

REPORTER: For the record, this gap between mid-november and early december — is there a gap because there are no e-mails pertaining to this situation between them? Or are there more e-mails to come out?

SNOW: That I don’t know. Like I said, that’s why I think you need to go back and ask the Department of Justice. They’ve done the document production. We have not been in charge of it. I would refer questions to them.

REPORTER: Just to follow, can you say again on the record that the president has no recollection of ever being asked about any of this?

SNOW: Yeah, the removal — yes, that is correct.

Re: Republicans Call For Gonzales' Resignation

Now that both the House and Senate have approved subpoenas for Turdblossom Rove, Harriet Miers, Kyle Sampson and two others, Alberto Gonzales is feeling the heat.

He took a running jump out of Washington DC today, to calm down other US attorneys who may be feeling nervous these days. Although he claims he will NOT resign, there's no telling what might happen if Congress comes down hard on his co-conspiritors and they flip over.

Lets face facts here: The White House simply cannot allow Rove to be put under oath. You know it and I know it. If they can throw the Attorney over the side to keep their dirty trickster from testifying, you'd better believe they'll do it. In a heartbeat.

So now we're getting into the area of a game of high-stakes 'Chicken,' and it's a game that the administration doesn't play very well...because they've never had much practice. They're used to having the deck stacked, the cards marked and their own crooked dealer passing them out. This has started to become, in the words of Mr. Spock, "Fascinating."

Re: Republicans Call For Gonzales' Resignation

Will anybody who thinks that Alberto Gonzales has a snowball's chance in Hell please raise their hands??

Now we find out that:
  1. He WAS briefed on the US attorneys before they were fired.
  2. He approved the firings.
  3. He stood there in front of God and everybody and lied like a Persian rug about it last week.
  4. The meeting at which the firings of the attorneys was discussed took place during the 18-day gap for which NO DOCUMENTS HAVE BEEN PROVIDED.

Stick a fork in him; he's done. (You'd think that with all the practice these Rot Gut Republicans get, they'd be better liars...)

Re: Republicans Call For Gonzales' Resignation

Guiliani just made a fool of himself right before the news broke that Gonzales is a big fat liar. Gonzales is an honorable and decent man! Yeah as honorable as Bush!

Quote:
Republican Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, a former U.S. attorney in New York, said Thursday that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales should get "the benefit of the doubt" in the uproar over the firings of federal prosecutors.

"The President has addressed it," Giuliani, the former New York City mayor, said. "The Attorney General's an honorable man. He's a decent man. He should be given a chance to explain and everybody should sort of give him the benefit of the doubt and allow him to explain." Giuliani Defends Gonzales in Uproar | TIME
What a joke....all those Republican Senators yesterday claiming the truth will be told behind closed doors, without a transcript, not under oath. I wonder if they are even cringing now, as they should be. Gonzales was completely involved with firing the attorneys for political reasons, to make room for loyal Bush croneys and because some of them investigated Republican crimes.

It's said the White House releases bad news on a Friday so no one will pay attention. Well we are paying attention you crooks and liars! Checks and balances are here and Gonzales and torture policies are going down. If we still had a Republican majority, guess what? We would never even find out the truth.

Quote:
Gonzales attended meeting on U.S. attorney firings

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales attended a meeting last November that discussed the imminent enacting of a plan to fire U.S. federal prosecutors, the Justice Department said in documents released on Friday.

The documents showed a much greater involvement for Gonzales than previously acknowledged in the controversial dismissal of eight prosecutors that has prompted calls for his resignation and added to pressure on the Bush administration.

One email dated November 21, 2006 from Gonzales' former chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, set plans for a meeting for November 27 on "U.S. Attorney appointments" and noted it would be held in the attorney general's conference room with Gonzales there.

Justice Department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse, asked about the meeting, said it "concerned the roll-out of the U.S. attorney plan."

WASHINGTON (AP) - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales approved plans to fire several U.S. attorneys in an hourlong meeting last fall, according to documents released Friday that indicate he was more involved in the dismissals than he has claimed.

Last week, Gonzales said he ``was not involved in any discussions about what was going on'' in the firings of eight prosecutors that has since led to a political firestorm and calls for his ouster.

A Nov. 27 meeting, in which the attorney general and at least five top Justice Department officials participated, focused on a five-step plan for carrying out the firings of the prosecutors, Gonzales' aides said late Friday.

There, Gonzales signed off on the plan, which was drafted by his chief of staff, Kyle Sampson. Sampson resigned last week. Another Justice aide closely involved in the dismissals, White House liaison Monica Goodling, has also taken a leave of absence, two officials said.
