CNN reports US Military protecting terrorist group in Iraq

Whats up with this? Either make it policy that you'll deal with terrorists if its to your advantage or remove their classification as a terrorist group. The status quo doesn't make any sense to me.

U.S. protects Iranian opposition group in Iraq - CNN.com

Quote:
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- An Iranian opposition group based in Iraq, despite being considered terrorists by the United States, continues to receive protection from the American military in the face of Iraqi pressure to leave the country.

It's a paradox possible only because the United States considers the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, or MEK, a source of valuable intelligence on Iran.

Iranian officials tied the MEK to an explosion in February at a girls school in Zahedan, Iran. (Full story)

The group also is credited with helping expose Iran's secret nuclear program through spying on Tehran for decades. And the group is considered an ally to America because of its opposition to Tehran.

However, the U.S. State Department officially considers the MEK a terrorist organization -- meaning no American can deal with it; U.S. banks must freeze its assets; and any American giving support to its members is committing a crime.

The U.S. military, though, regularly escorts MEK supply runs between Baghdad and its base, Camp Ashraf.

Re: CNN reports US Military protecting terrorist group in Iraq

The MEK is classified a terrorist organization by the State Department. The US should withdraw any support given to them. The Red Cross seems to want them as a protected group of some sort. Turn the MEK over to the Red Cross and let them be reponsible for any results.

Re: CNN reports US Military protecting terrorist group in Iraq

No surprised there. The US has and currently does support terrorism, offering unconditional support to some, even before this article came out. The "war on terror" is massive hypocrisy by Bush.

Someone should tell them that bad press can be prevented by not abusing prisoners in the first place. Censorship is only needed to preserve the good reputation of those who have tortured and/or murdered already.

Re: CNN reports US Military protecting terrorist group in Iraq

anyone watch nightline yesterday? apparently the US also supports a group of terrorists called jundullah (escorted by pakistani intelligence service) who cross into iran, kidnap soldiers and government officials and execute them. oh, they're also responsible for the bombing of a bus in the iranian city of zahedan. according to the article:

Quote:
A Pakistani tribal militant group responsible for a series of deadly guerrilla raids inside Iran has been secretly encouraged and advised by American officials since 2005, U.S. and Pakistani intelligence sources tell ABC News.

The group, called Jundullah, is made up of members of the Baluchi tribe and operates out of the Baluchistan province in Pakistan, just across the border from Iran.

Quote:
U.S. officials say the U.S. relationship with Jundullah is arranged so that the U.S. provides no funding to the group, which would require an official presidential order or "finding" as well as congressional oversight.
and US officials would never lie now would they.

Quote:

Jundullah has produced its own videos showing Iranian soldiers and border guards it says it has captured and brought back to Pakistan.

The leader, Regi, claims to have personally executed some of the Iranians.

"He used to fight with the Taliban. He's part drug smuggler, part Taliban, part Sunni activist," said Alexis Debat, a senior fellow on counterterrorism at the Nixon Center and an ABC News consultant who recently met with Pakistani officials and tribal members.
hmmmm, cheney sure knows how to pick 'em.

It's a sad state of affairs. In Iraq, our only friends are the government that we put in place. All the other major players are terrorist groups in one form or another.

It's an alliance of convenience, but it flies against Bush's rhetoric of "Your either with us or against us!!!" and the condemnation of anyone who associates with terrorists groups.

For our government to be supporting terrorists in any way is a complete destruction of the Bush Administration's integrity.

Come on guys, it's clear. US-supported terrorists kidnapping and murdering Iranians = good. Iranian soldiers kidnapping (but not killing) British sailors = bad.

Re: CNN reports US Military protecting terrorist group in Iraq

Well, you know, this isn't a game we're playing here. The American way of life depends on the survival of morally bankrupt foreign policies... somehow. Just because we're supporting terrorists doesn't mean that we're on the wrong side, it just means they're on the right side! Because our side is the right side, and we're going to win! Go 'Merica!

I wonder if the terrorist groups are considered part of the "coalition of the willing"

Now that's kind of silly, how can the US stick to the idea of not supporing and/or protecting terrorist groups, when they and Israel or two of the greatest.???

How can you call the United States a terrorist group? Do you really believ that?

Now that I know you consider your own country to be a terrorist state I have a better idea where you are coming from when I read/ignore your posts in the future.

Re: CNN reports US Military protecting terrorist group in Iraq

This story has been around for a long time

US funds Al Qaeda - but only in Iran

And long before that.

Apparently Sunni's killing Shiites are "freedom fighters" in Iran
So it's not state sponsored terrorism, it's state sponsored "freedomism"
