Florida

I just read in a foreign newspaper that the Florida legislators voted to scrap all voting machines and that Florida will return to paper ballots. I have not read this in any American paper but if it's true I can only say "Too bad that it's eight years too late". I'm suspicious that De Telegraaf may have been taken since I can not confirm this but just the same, I hope it's true.

The bill's other major provision would replace nearly all of the state's touch-screen-voting machines with optical-scan paper ballots. Providing a paper trail became a bigger issue after a heated congressional election in Sarasota County last year, when more than 18,000 electronic ballots did not register a vote in the race. Republican Vern Buchanan was declared the winner, but a congressional panel this week ordered an investigation.

Scrapping touch-screens also was a priority for Crist.

Under the bill, the state will use $28 million in federal money to replace touch-screen machines in 15 counties that don't currently use paper ballots, including Lake and Sumter.

A touch-screen machine will remain available at each polling location to comply with federal rules intended to help those with disabilities vote independently. The bill eventually would replace those machines with versions that create a paper trail.

My jurisdiction pulled all but one electronic machine from each polling place before the 2006 election, and used paper ballots instead. The machines we had incorporated a button on the back that could put the machine in an administrative mode (without requiring a key or password) and allow anyone to change the tally in the machine. The one electronic machine in our polling place was next to the election monitor, with the back panel exposed to make sure nobody hit the button and played around.

One note though - electronic voting was not widely used in Florida in the 2000 election. Remember all that "hanging chad", "pregnant chad" nonsense?

Electronic voting could be very secure and efficient. The systems we are using in the US today are not.

What is needed, IMHO, is a standards based, open source effort. Take as an example the electronic gaming (gambling) industry. They have a technical association that develops standards for their machines, including interoperability and security. Electronic voting manufacturers could learn a lot from those guys.

He lost already, fuck…
Trust me, he’ll survive the mortal head wound and you will get what you ask for in 08. People all over the world will run into the streets when he wins and celebrate. Soon the U.N. will tell you what you can drive and local government what you can eat. Hur`fucking`ray

Re: Florida

I dont remember the democrats claiming anything was wrong in 2006. I guess the machines only work when they win.

Yea, give me a minute.
Okay, translation to normal people talk words ; Opa made a comment about democratic planted propaganda on voting discrepancies in Florida during the 2,000 election. I in turn quoted the all famous jingle for him to get over it, “Gore” lost. I then correlated the massive stage set occurring on doom and gloom “were all gonna die if we don’t vote for dumbocrats” environmental running platform for 08, I don’t know, al-gore came to mind then the antichrist the cat walked by who knows…

But what about the Democrat voters, who weren't able to figure out how to correctly punch the ballots? Don't we need to make sure that the ballots are really, really simple, so that Democrat voters can figure out how those things work??

Hey, that’s right. The mindset was wrong, it’s dimocrates that are stupid. Every vote president Bush got went smoothly and efficiently.

As you may recall, we didn't hear the usual Democrat Party bluster about "voter fraud" during the most recent election. Why? Because the "voter fraud" talking point only gets trotted out by the Democrats when they LOSE. When they win, everything is suddenly fine.

Oh I know, what really ticked me off though was the attempt to uncertified the active combat overseas votes. Now that’s low…
