Charges against Luis Posada Cariles dropped.

BBC NEWS | Americas | US drops Cuban militant's charges

Quote:
A US judge has dropped immigration charges against a Cuban exile, Luis Posada Carriles, who has been accused of blowing up a Cuban airliner.

Mr Posada, 79, was detained in May 2005 after entering the US illegally, but was released on bail last month.

A former CIA employee, he is wanted in Venezuela and Cuba over the downing of a Cuban airliner in 1976 in which 73 people died. He denies involvement.

US authorities have ruled out returning him to Cuba or Venezuela.
There is now no excuse not to deport this man so he can face trial for his alleged terrorist activity.

Re: Charges against Luis Posada Cariles dropped.

So, essentially... he is a free man that does not have to face trial for the accusations against him? I followed this story a while back, and the journalist(s) covering Posada predicted that he would eventually and essentially be granted asylum in the US, which seems to be what this amounts to. However, I don't really know the specifics of the events around the man, so I can't say for sure.

With Venezuela, yes. The treaty with Venezuela has been in effect since 1923.

Why would the US protect an alleged terrorist? We have alleged terrorists in jail without habeas corpus, a right every human on this planet should have. Are we really that hypocritical? I think I'm becoming disgusted. Oh wait, I've already been, for years.

For the Cuban vote in Miami.
That's why Papa Bush pardoned Orlando Bosch, who was convicted of terrorism by a US jury, for attacking a Polish ship bound for Cuba in Miami harbor with RPG launcher.

He is also a prime suspect, along with Posada-Carriles in the bombing of a civilian airliner that killed 73 people, but they were Cubans, communist civilians, so it's OK.

That's 2 alleged terrorists that the US is harboring.

I didn't know I could still be shocked by these morons in the White House. But this is shocking me.

Did you see Baby Bush wink at the Queen? How embarressing.

I agree. It is really hard to get shocked by anything that comes out of the White House after the Clinton years.

At any rate, based upon the latest polling, the next POTUS will most likely be another republican (rudy G beats every dem candidate easily) what will you do then?

Maybe you can pull an "Alec Baldwin" and promise to leave the country??

PS - I watched Bush wink at the Queen and found it quite amusing and endearing. I doubt he's losing any sleep over it.

Re: Charges against Luis Posada Cariles dropped.

That's so funny I forgot to laugh Alex

So what is it with the Bush connection to terrorist. They harbor and pardon two Cuban terrorists. This one was here illegally and while the raids are deporting people all over this country, this guy gets to stay.

And speaking of terrorists, has Bush even said anything about his family friend, Osama Bin Laden since he told us a few years ago, he doesn't really think about him anymore?

Why does Bush protect and/or not pursue terrorists? Why did Bush take us to war in a country that didn't have anything to do with any terrorist attacks against us or our allies? I really wish I knew the answers to these questions.

Bush likes terrorists so much he decided to turn Iraq into a haven/training ground for future terrorists. He even installed a puppet government so that the terrorists can get experience toppling governments.

Re: Charges against Luis Posada Cariles dropped.

Two things to remember:

1. These are not terrorists, they are freedom fighters - big diference.

2. US policy prohibits the extradition of anyone who may be subject to torture in a foriegn nation. Obviously, he cannot be returned to either Cuba or Venezuela for this reason alone.

Ironic since the U.S. has no problem "rendering" people to places like Syria for the sole purpose of having suspects tortured.
