Re: Today, May 14th, is Wiretap the Internet Day.
I'm surprised none of the many military groupies who post here brought up DoD's celebration of wiretap day by blocking soldier access to MySpace, YouTube and other sites.
AGORAVOX - The Citizen Media From the article: ~Soldiers serving overseas will lose some of their online links to friends and loved ones back home under a U.S. Department of Defense policy that a high-ranking Army official said would take effect Monday. The Defense Department will begin blocking access world-wide to YouTube, MySpace and 11 other popular Web sites on its computers and networks, according to a memo sent Friday by Gen. B.B. Bell, the U.S. Forces Korea commander. The policy is being implemented to protect information and improve security, as well as reduce drag on the department’s networks. “This recreational traffic impacts our official DoD network and bandwidth ability, while posing a significant operational security challenge,” Gen. Bell said in the memo.~ Spending $8B a month on Iraq and Internet bandwidth is a problem? Security challenge with NSA at the wheel? Shouldn't be any big deal to the groupies as they seem to believe whatever the government determines is in their best interests is fine with them. |

Wow. You completely missed the point. While I agree that some form of government is necessary to protect freedoms, searching through your private information is not how this is accomplished. What you're asking for isn't freedom, it's authoritarianism.

Military blocks MySpace, YouTube, MTV, Photobucket, and more... So if you wish to discuss that, please go to the proper thread. Matt

I agree with this 100%. Reading our mail (electronic or otherwise) is a draconian breach of our privacy imo.

But not enough to put a stop to it.
