Jury returns verdict in Padilla case

Quote:
MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Jurors reached a verdict Thursday in the trial of Jose Padilla and two co-defendants charged with supporting al Qaeda and other violent Islamic extremist groups overseas.

The jury's verdict is scheduled to be read at 2 p.m. EDT before U.S. District Judge Marcia Cooke in Miami's downtown federal courthouse.

The jury of seven men and five women deliberated for about a day and a half following a three-month trial.

Padilla, Adham Amin Hassoun and Kifah Wael Jayyousi face possible sentences of life in prison if convicted of all three charges in the case.

Prosecutors argued that Padilla was a "star recruit" for a terrorism support cell that provided Muslim extremist soldiers to fight around the globe with al Qaeda.

His defense attorneys, who put on no evidence, told the jury that the charges were overblown and U.S. government prosecutors were preying on post-9/11 fears. The defense said prosecutors repeated invoked Osama bin Laden's name to scare jurors.

There has been a great deal of interest in this case, and it certainly has significant political ramifications vis-a-vis the "war on terror".

It will be interesting to see what the jury returns about a half hour from now.

Whether he is guilty or not i do not know.

Either way, his treatment was inexcusable.

Conspiracy to murder, kidnap, and maim people in a foreign country, conspiracy to provide material support for terrorists, and providing material support for terrorists are a far cry from being 'thought crimes' where one seeks to prosecute the mere opinion of another.

Re: Jury returns verdict in Padilla case

Has there been any proof of these "years of torture"?

Of course, you're prepared to offer some sort of evidence, beyond your typical panty-waist liberal type rant, that this "torture" actually took place, right?

That site is decidedly left-leaning. I noticed (and I didn't peruse the entire site so, if it's there, it's possible I missed it) that they didn't show the opinion of doctors who held different opinions than Hegarty. That can be due to two things: Either they don't care enough about those opinions to print them, or they're too afraid of what those opinions might say to print them.

Either way, I don't believe the scumbag was tortured...

Anyway, as for the OP ... Always nice to see a terrorist brought to justice.
