Re: Obama Passport-gate getting more interesting

Hmmm...

Looks like now, not only is "Guilt by Association" an unforgivable political sin, now we can add "Guilt by Employment" to the list.

What a wonderful development!

And now, it turns out that the snoop isn't some evil Bush Administration operative subverting Mr. Obama's rights - it's an employee of his own trusted advisor.

Hmmmmm. How convenient.

Interesting, no?

Interesting? No, friggin' silly

Carry it a tad further, the government that hired those contractors was run by George W. Bush...........

But to blame Obama is completely ridiculous and shows, once again, the depravity of the GOP and her supporters.

Like you guys.
You've completly missed the point, which is the silliness of Obama's campaign jumpng to the retarded conclusion that this was some big Bush administration conspiracy.

Re: Obama Passport-gate getting more interesting

Agreed Matt. This is entirely 100% a waste of time story. Obama campaign get it together on this sloppy shit. There is just no need for it when your message is so strong and speaks for itself. Don't get caught up int he media's games or the Clinton's game. You are ahead. You have the path. If you continue to look above the fray those damn Arkansans can't touch you. And they know it. So cut this shit out and get back to being the awesome candidate that you are.

And for anyone suspecting Obama involvement in this event. How often, exactly do CEOs hang out with low level employees? That's what I thought.

This complaint is still as valid as ever.

There were 3 accesses and in here we are talking only 1 of them.
This could have been a "testing the defenses" operation. I'm not going to assume that, but it may be someone just wanted to see if it could be done and what would happen.

It is interesting though. And you're right in that the unauthorized access is unacceptable.

Yes, clearly the President should have these folks vetted a lot more thoroughly, you know, more goverment intrusion and all.

That way these guys could have played the victim card a lot easier and said they were refused their job based on politicial association or race or something.

Re: Obama Passport-gate getting more interesting

No not at all, more it needs to go in he popular crimes section for the possible charges that everyone would want thrown at this Obama staffer no?

I mean its such an awful breach of privacy right??? Don't we need to waste more money and time on investigations? Shouldn't the IG's office be checking for associations of that person who snooped into the files? That would lead to err...Obama.

Now if that same person looked at Hillary's and McCain's passport file...well wouldn't it be Obama who was trying to interfere with a campaign illegally if he was involved?

Re: Obama Passport-gate getting more interesting

well here’s one item I just saw, I guess this is work Americans won't do either...how in the hell, with Homeland security concerns etc. do we wind up outsourcing our passport biz?

Outsourced passport work risky
By Bill Gertz
March 26, 2008

The United States has outsourced the manufacturing of its electronic passports to overseas companies — including one in Thailand that was victimized by Chinese espionage — raising concerns that cost savings are being put ahead of national security, an investigation by The Washington Times has found.

The Government Printing Office's decision to export the work has proved lucrative, allowing the agency to book more than $100 million in recent profits by charging the State Department more money for blank passports than it actually costs to make them, according to interviews with federal officials and documents obtained by The Times.

The profits have raised questions both inside the agency and in Congress because the law that created GPO as the federal government's official printer explicitly requires the agency to break even by charging only enough to recover its costs.

Lawmakers said they were alarmed by The Times' findings and plan to investigate why U.S. companies weren't used to produce the state-of-the-art passports, one of the crown jewels of American border security.

"I am not only troubled that there may be serious security concerns with the new passport production system, but also that GPO officials may have been profiting from producing them," said Rep. John D. Dingell, the Michigan Democrat who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Officials at GPO, the Homeland Security Department and the State Department played down such concerns, saying they are confident that regular audits and other protections already in place will keep terrorists and foreign spies from stealing or copying the sensitive components to make fake passports.

"Aside from the fact that we have fully vetted and qualified vendors, we also note that the materials are moved via a secure transportation means, including armored vehicles," GPO spokesman Gary Somerset said.

But GPO Inspector General J. Anthony Ogden, the agency's internal watchdog, doesn't share that confidence. He warned in an internal Oct. 12 report that there are "significant deficiencies with the manufacturing of blank passports, security of components, and the internal controls for the process."
