China's response to protests

... The crackdown was only one part of the new strategy. The Chinese news media initially had not been allowed to cover the Lhasa violence. But by March 15,, that had changed. There, broadcast on state television, was video of Tibetans raging through Lhasa. No images were shown of the crackdown the next day.

The first article doesn't come out and say it, but it definitely seems to hint that China's unusual response to the protests were preparation for a propaganda campaign. But instead of just cracking down right away, why would China want to get footage of the riots? Could this have to do with 'exercising restraint,' or justification for later oppression of Tibetans?

They will have been instructed to film dissenters for future arrest, torture , imprisonment and eventual execution. An airlift of 'hoodies' to Tibetans wouldn't cost a lot.

Re: China's response to protests

Thats the worst article on the subject I read so far and the NY Times has a hard-on for communist governments.

Howmany were were killed again? oh yea..... Imagine if they were anti-war protestors and the US government did to those people what the Chinese government did to its people. What kind of story do you think the Times would print?
