Myanmar officials seize UN emergency aid

Quote:
BANGKOK, Thailand (CNN) -- Authorities in cyclone-ravaged Myanmar have seized United Nations aid intended for victims of the disaster, prompting the organization to halt future relief flights, a U.N. World Food Program official said.

The organization, which insists on distributing its own relief supplies, says two aircraft-loads of food, medicine and equipment, were seized by the army in Myanmar's main city Yangon.

"This is another example of them actively getting in the way of relief getting to the victims," said Tony Banbury, Asia director of the World Food Program.

Asked whether the move would jeopardize future U.N. aid flights, he said, "absolutely, from our perspective, it shuts them down."

On Saturday, the United Nations had been planning three further aid flights, from Dubai, India and Cambodia. It would bring tons of biscuits, emergency ready-to-eat meals, and logistical support and equipment, such as boats, to reach isolated areas.

Shades of Somalia all over again - sick, twisted, depraved despots seizing food and medicine intended for the victims of disaster.

Unbelievable.

Re: Myanmar officials seize UN emergency aid

The political reality is that dictatorships see even natural disasters as signs of weakness, and resist admitting the extent of the damage and the need, and the Myanmar junta does have plenty to fear from a huge incursion of foreign aid and foreign aid workers undermining their leadership.

So is this aid that was supposed to go to Hurricane Katrina victimes or to Myanmar? I figured it's for Myanmar but with FEMA's collossal screw ups, aid could still be in limbo 2 1/2 years later.

Re: Myanmar officials seize UN emergency aid

Strange.....

In one week we have two countries with natural disasters.......tens of thousands are dead....because of government corruption or neglect....or because of the way nature often shows her fury...........and very few can see that the response to Katrina wasn't all that bad after all.

As a matter of fact after the local officials screwed the pooch royally.......after the federal government took over the scene things went pretty well in comparison to Burma and China.

Just a thought........

Are you serious?

You think you can blame Bush for this as well?

Hes not blaming Bush, he just wants to get a dig in. But to address the topic, its no surprise. The authorities want to get the food to the military and politicians and friends first and then hand it out themselves to the people to look like they are the heroes. Meanwhile they surpress information to the contrary, to keep the people from revolting. Places like this should make us appreciate the "Bush Regime".

Comparing apples and oranges again, huh? Or do you just want to tell us that you are proud that the US outperformed a third world country dictatorship when it comes to disaster relief?

Id say this proves once again the advantages to democracy and capitalism. The US can deal with its own disasters and still have plenty left over to help out the rest of the world too.

Yes. Does not change the fact that comparing Katrina to the Myanmar cyclone fails in most aspects.

dude not if you lived through the media blitz here...bush let those folks die, don’t you know? No not the reported raped and killed in the superdome ( took a bout a media out of control) and areas about NO, but in general.
Hbo did a special on it, they were primarily black, so bush didn't give a crap....

AND we convinced a hard core lefty mayor to take guns form RIGHTFUL LEGAL owners ( the most under reported story NOT to come out of that mess) Aint heard that one? Over a thousand collected….the real reason?
MY idea, the PR disaster to come if the law abiding folks kept them, they took them to make sure the black death rate didn't go up as folks started looting etc.....figure it out.

Crazy? You bet, but to some who feed off tis crap and spout it out, there ya go.....so heres to seeing a really oppressive gov. at work.

48 hours notice? They didn’t give a shit…Supplies? Don’t care.....some here should read and parse that...

Why are Republicans so determined to link disasters to Bush?

When Imperator was talking about aid not getting distributed I just wanted to know who the aid was for. I know you Republicans hate Bush but this thread isn't about him.

We're using a credit we can't afford to distribute this "aid" to the rest of the world.
