House passes bill to sue OPEC over oil prices

OK - let's say the DOJ wins, what next?

The US invades Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela?

Given how things are, I'd rather not find out.

House passes bill to sue OPEC over oil prices - Yahoo! News

Excerpt:

Quote:
The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved legislation on Tuesday allowing the Justice Department to sue OPEC members for limiting oil supplies and working together to set crude prices, but the White House threatened to veto the measure.

The bill would subject OPEC oil producers, including Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela, to the same antitrust laws that U.S. companies must follow.

The measure passed in a 324-84 vote, a big enough margin to override a presidential veto.

This could very well be the most ineffective Congress ever. I didn't think anyone could top the 108th.

And the guy on the other thread (about need for 30k reps) thinks we need more of these clowns?? How about the world producers just cut us off and then what would they do? Congressmen should be paid based on performance. Toothless crap like this should result in a reduction in pay. Solve problems and stop grandstanding for once congress!

These clowns are just a bunch of thieves. They take our taxes under threat of violence. What do we get for it? We should be reducing government. Less government, less taxes, more freedom.

They should also be required to read Article 1, Section 8, and find those 21 things that their permitted to do and what Congress is permitted to act on. Right now most of what they are doing is wrong and not what the Constitution says they are supposed to do.

Re: House passes bill to sue OPEC over oil prices

Neither party has had a serious energy plan for decades. We are one of the only nations who can not use their own resources. We can't drill our own oil, can't build any new refineries, can't build nuclear plants, can't process shale oil or upgrade and use our own coal, are restricted in wind farm usage, and haven't aggressively gone after an alternate energy source to become less oil dependent. They have, however, added huge gas taxes to the cost of a gallon of gasoline!

They have completely failed this nation and are the very cause of why we are in the shape we are in today. Their answer to the problem? Sue OPEC!

Sometimes I can not believe we elect these nimrods....and keep RE-electing them.

By the way, did anyone see the story about how OPEC suddenly stepped up to the Microphone and declared there is no logical reason why oil is going for $135 a barrell, and they presented historucal data, facts and figures to back it up. According to supply and demand they stated oil should be selling for around $60 - $70 a barrell, more than half LESS than what it is going for today. Saudi did agree, however, to start pumping more oil.

OK...NOW, did anyone notice the report mentioned in the news today about the price of oil? After OPEC's declaration, the price of oil dropped $4 a barrell in about an hour and reportedly kept gong south.

The FEDS announced this afternoon that they are launching an investigation into the possibly illegal tampering of oil prices!

Developing.....

Back to our 'honorable' representatives, though - IMO every American should join in a class-action law suit against the Federal Government, naming every Senator and Congrassman who has held office for the last 10-15 years and those still in office, for failure to do thei jobs, failure to come up with a plan, for the current cost of gas/the situation we are in! Of course it would never get anywhere, but if we failed as badly at our jobs as they have failed in theirs we would surely lose our jobs. IMO most if not all of them deserve to get the proverbial axe!

So we sue OPEC and they say - okay fine - we will just sell our oil to those country's that WILL pay the price and forget the US altogether. Great. Stupid assholes in congress!

He is possibly one of the bottum feeders that would make money off of this... but there are many many others that would.

No, more like this is the Dems answer to what should have been started when they had the House, Senate, and White House back in the late 70's when one of them said that we had a problem with oil, but they did nothing!! But look at what they are doing today..... law suit over oil prices.....rich..

Re: House passes bill to sue OPEC over oil prices

This is a little more informative: [U.S. House Passes Legislation To Sue OPEC Over Oil Price Fixing] and [GovTrack: H.R. 6074: Text of Legislation].

I don't know the chances of this succeeding, since the Senate must pass it and has a little more experience in foreign policy matters. If the Senate passes it or comes to a similar compromise, then this looks like it could be pretty big, since a Presidential veto could be overriden. It would amend parts of the concept of "sovereign immunity" in US Code, essentially allowing the established DOJ Task Force to sue a foreign government that is violating the text of the Act.

I'm not sure what the consequences would be, but it could include seizing assets, imposing sanctions, etc. Still, whatever measures were taken to enforce a court decision, OPEC could retaliate.

Whatever group you're thinking, it includes 103 Republicans.

And then OPEC counter-sues Congress for monopolizing idiocy.

Congress should be sued for damages caused by years of deficit spending that has devalued our currency, resulting in the ever-increasing prices of everything that we buy.

Of course, it's slightly more complicated than that...
