Mole removed from McCain's face

Probably precautionary, but not helpful news for McCain's effort to appear healthy, vital, and vigorous.

McCain has spot removed from his face

Quote:
BAKERSFIELD, California - Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who has suffered from skin cancer in the past, had a spot removed from his face on Monday during a routine checkup by a doctor in Phoenix, an aide said.

"At this point it was just a precautionary removal," the aide told reporters on McCain's campaign plane.

The aide described the spot, on one of McCain's temples, as being like a mole. It was visible on the side of his face and covered with a bandage, the aide said.

McCain has had four malignant melanomas -- a potentially lethal type of skin cancer -- surgically removed since 1993. Three of them were limited to the top layers of the skin and were not invasive.

The fourth melanoma was invasive and was removed from his left temple in 2000. During that surgery, doctors also took out lymph nodes to see if the cancer had spread. The lymph nodes showed no evidence of cancer.

Doctors have removed other less serious skin cancers, including basal cell and squamous cell cancers, from McCain's skin without complication.

As a skin cancer survivor, McCain remains at risk for recurrence or new cancers. He gets a skin exam every three to four months.

Re: Mole removed from McCain's face

As long as he picks a good running mate I don't see why this should be that important. Then again Mitt Romney is seen as being his likely pick so I guess it is a worry actually. This will hopefully turn out to be nothing. I have had things removed a few times and it has always turned out to be nothing.

Re: Mole removed from McCain's face

Thousands of people have moles removed, including people who are young. Everyone knows McCain is old. This won't change anything.

Yeah but it means more cause he's already had skin cancer.

Re: Mole removed from McCain's face

Another reason this will probably not be much to concern ourselves with is that usually skin cancer is only a real problem when the person with it doesn't get it looked at right away. I'm sure that since he has already had it he gets it looked at immediately when anything pops up which means it should be easily treatable most likely by just removing it which they already did.

He's not going to look good as POTUS giving speeches with bandages on his face all the time...but then he doesn't look good without em either.

It's good to know that you focus on the important aspects of being a President...

Is this thread now about how pretty politicians are?

Seems to be, since people have completely dismissed the medical concerns.

They will be concerns once a cancer diagnosis is made. I'm only 30 years old and have had three different growths removed and none of them turned out to be cancer. That on top of the fact that skin cancer is the most treatable form of cancer especially with a early diagnosis means it just isn't worth getting worked up about yet.

Re: Mole removed from McCain's face

I am about John's age and have had several skin cancers removed from my face and ears. Only the melanoma that has gone passed the first layer of skin will harm you if not treated. The others are not invasive and I dare say millions upon millions of people walk around every day with skin cancers that are not treated and they live to be quite old. You can bet that he is well taken care of, and not to worry about it.

Agreed, but it does make the selection of a running mate every bit as important as the candidate himself. I like McCain personally, even though I feel he is too old to be running for president. But with that advanced age and his predisposition for melanoma we MUST note the possibility of him not being able to complete his term should he win. That makes the selection of a veep more important than ever. And it also means voters must recognize that veep might well be president much more than they have ever done and factor that into their choice of McCain(or anyone else with a potential health issue) for president.

That should prove tricky. Moreso than ever before.

Hope it turns out to be nothing.

No need to politicize this, however.
