Re: Palin Speech
Although, you know. Obama said "if they bring a knife, we'll bring a gun." Maybe McCain is smarter than everyone thought. Maybe Sarah is an up close and personal knife fighter.
I'm looking forward to it. |

Re: Palin Speech
I hope things do get to her record, rather than the personal stuff we've seen. I could care less about the personal lives of these people.
I think it should matter to any voter that she left a town of under 7,000 with a debt of $20 million. That she hired a lawfirm at the time to lobby Washington for earmarks. And that as Governor she raised taxes. I imagine when it comes to foreign policy her positions will mirror those of John McCain, which are completely vague on Iraq and tough-talking but not yet substantive on Russia. The thing that voters are going to have to decide is if they think that the McCain/Palin team's new re-tooled message of "Change" can wash over 8 years of unprecedented deficits, and financing a war with tax cuts and borrowing from China, which are certainly not traditional conservative positions. The Republicans apparently will continue to deny or own up to any of their previous mistakes, simply brushing them aside and blaming Democrats for all the nations ills. Having said all that, she's playing to a friendly audience, and she'll no doubt deliver a fine speech tonight. It's obvious where this election is going now: it's a redux of 2004, with the right being hijacked by neo-cons and trying to mobilize values voters. Can they sacrifice all those Independents? Only time will tell. |

Re: Palin Speech
I predict that her speech will be brilliant, and everyone in the audience will applaud loudly and will be on their feet the entire time, hanging on every word. She'll say all the right things that her audience wants to hear. Much like any other convention speech.
Will it win votes for McCain? I think that's impossible to tell, seeing as the elections are still 67 days away. Will it play well with Republicans? Absolutely. I plan on listening to her speech with as open a mind as possible. I'm really interested to see if she addresses some of her criticisms. |

Re: Palin Speech
I don't know if McCain-Palin are going to win by running against the media. That's certainly not the kind of argument that appeals to independents. There are very good lines there, it will make the base excited. But will it change peoples minds away from Obama? Seems unlikely. It is the kind of speech that should produce a 1-2 point bounce by Friday which will still leave McCain behind. New swing state polls aren't looking to good. Obama up 12 in Minnesota, up 15 in Iowa and up 2 in Ohio. If McCain doesn't win New Mexico, CO and Iowa his chances become very very slim.

Yesterday, John McCain actually said that if he’s president he’ll take on, and I quote, 'the old boys’ network in Washington.' I’m not making this up. This is somebody been in Congress for 26 years, who put seven of the most powerful Washington lobbyists in charge of his campaign. And now he tells us that he’s the one who’s gonna take on the old boys' network,” he said. “In the McCain campaign that’s called a staff meeting!- Obama, 9/17/2008 |
