Re: Palin Supports "Path to Citizenship" for Illegals
Quote:
Do you support a path to citizenship that doesn't involve all illegals having to leave the country first? I think that was the question and I never understood how anyone who really wants to solve the problem can advocate this. Some will leave but the rest will go further into the shadows and the problem will remain. Obviously it would be the most 'fair' decision but practically it wont work. When I tackle a problem I want it solved for good. I think the US needs to secure the border first (unlike in '86) then take the hit and give everyone unconditional amnesty. Problem solved forever. |

Re: Palin Supports "Path to Citizenship" for Illegals
Personally, I am anti-immigration. Another reason for me to be opposed to Palin.

Re: Palin Supports "Path to Citizenship" for Illegals
The problem with the McCain-Palin ticket is not that they are stupid it's that they have absolutely no ability to stay on message and articulate a consistently conservative opinion. It's getting sad.

Yesterday, John McCain actually said that if he’s president he’ll take on, and I quote, 'the old boys’ network in Washington.' I’m not making this up. This is somebody been in Congress for 26 years, who put seven of the most powerful Washington lobbyists in charge of his campaign. And now he tells us that he’s the one who’s gonna take on the old boys' network,” he said. “In the McCain campaign that’s called a staff meeting!- Obama, 9/17/2008 |

Re: Palin Supports "Path to Citizenship" for Illegals
Quote:
1) Reissue everyone here legally a biometrically-enhanced social security card 2) Make it the only acceptable form of proof of legal working status 3) Increase the penalties for hiring illegal immigrants by a factor of 10. 4) In concert with these reforms, dramatically increase the number of guest worker visas, especially for skilled professions. Do those four things and illegals won't be able to find steady work; if they can't find steady work they'll leave. This policy has the benefit of punishing employers directly rather than illegals, which is much easier to sell politically. You can spin it as preventing the exploitation of laborers and protecting the wages of semi-skilled people who are here legally. Further, you pre-empt the cries of "racist" by tying it directly to a major expansion of legal immigration. This is one of those problems that would be very easy to solve if Hispanics voted 50-50 rather than 65-35. Because of that imbalance, it's all electoral politics rather than economics driving the issue. Right now, politicians who want all the Hispanics to be legal is because they'll get more votes, on net, and politicians who want to limit the number becoming legal is because they will lose votes, on net. It's less a partisan divide than it is a function of congressional district demographics--though that works out to more Dems supporting amnesty than Repubs. Sad, really. |

I admit I don't have a solution....some hard decisions need to be made.
