Illinois Gov. Blagojevich arrest and charges (merger)

Not too smart, he tries to sell Obama's seat to the highest bidder (allegedly).

Here's a highlight:

Quote:
They also allege Blagojevich is heard on tape demanding a corporate board seat for his wife worth as much as $150,000 a year; promises of campaign funds, including cash up front; and the post of secretary of health and human services or an ambassadorship for himself in the Obama administration.

Re: Holy Crap...Illinois Governor insane move is supported by Obama???

Blagojevich is the epitome of everything that is wrong with politics in Illinois, and politics in general. He is the most arrogant politician I've ever seen. It amazes me that he was elected to a second term. If there's a silver lining to this, there's a slim chance this could be a wake up call to the people of Ililnois. It's only a slim chance though, because we didn't change anything after the previous governor, George Ryan, went to prison. All that changed was the party in charge, and the only thing that changes are the people who benefit from the graft.

I really don't think the Governor's arrest and his decision about Bank of America should be the same thread. The BoA dealing isn't part of the corruption charges.

Yeah i don't really see anything much else to add on the corruption stuff, that's not even breaking news when it happens in Chicago (no offense), but the BoA stuff is truly stunning...

The sad thing about this is that he is still the sitting governor of Illinois! He was arrested for trying to sell the vacant US Senate seat, but he still has the power to make the appointment.

That is really going to hurt the credibility of whoever he picks even if that person didn't play a part in it.

The charge that he was taking money for awarding contracts is pretty standard around here, but the rest of this stuff is not your run of the mill Illinois/Chicago corruption. He is on tape in very plain language trying to sell the seat to the US Senate among other things.

Exactly. How do you accept the seat without looking like you were in on it?

I agree - it is a separate issue. But they are related in that Blagojevich has no clout at all right now, and this will have an effect on any decisions, especially controversial ones.

Re: Holy Crap...Illinois Governor insane move is supported by Obama???

Another interesting note that is tangentially related to this is that Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois recently wrote to President Bush to commute former Governor George Ryan's prison sentence. Ryan has only served one year of his six year sentence for corruption charges stemming from his time as governor. What does that say about Durbin and his opinion of the seriousness of corruption in this state? Ryan and Durbin are in opposite parties, and it just shows how all the top level politicians here are looking out for themselves and each other as opposed to the people of this state.

Maybe Durbin is trying to show a sense of Bi-partisanship?

Other corrupt states like LA (God i'm digging my own grave today) have Governor's imprisoned and both Dems and Republicans have tried to show support to get him out but the guidlines are very sticky.

Re: Holy Crap...Illinois Governor insane move is supported by Obama???

Here is a quote by Blagojevich from yesterday that I just saw on WGN news. He was responding to a question about the possible corruption probe into his administration, as reported by the Chicago Tribune.

"I don't care whether you tape me privately or publicly, I can tell you whatever I say is always lawful. And the things I'm interested in doing are always lawful."

Unbelievable.

It's bi-partisan all right. Bi-partisan support for corruption. It makes me sick.
