Back to you.
thank you, but thats life...no one is guaranteed anything nor should they be.

as to the rest; do you mean Could or Would...? I assume you mean..could count on the gov.?

Deragatory? No, pity? Yes. My comments where aimed at the concept that the gov. is the answer to ones problems, especially when it comes to employment, IF they have no where else to turn and are that , uhm, desperate, well, there it is. If you count on the gov. to make your problems go away you're lost already. I don't. I wish the government would get the hell out of the way.

really? how so? Has there been money taken out of circulation that precludes you or me or anyone from making more than they do?

And I am sure you realize that when it comes to who the benefactors are, as to gov. largess in all its forms, and whom gets the bang for their tax dollar, the bottom half of the pop, gets way more for their buck than they put it in compared to the “rich”…..

Definitely. By "the rich," of course, I don't mean merely the well-off professional types with six-figure incomes, or small business people who have managed to become successful. I mean guys like the ones at AIG who are pulling those controversial bonuses. I mean the big capitalists, the movers and shakers of the business world, the megabuck contributors to political campaigns, the manipulators of the lives of millions of working people.

Such persons are, from my perspective, most definitely "them," and I make no apologies for that.

'Merely'...I see, so anyone more successful than you, well that is until you finish your book and make money, is open to castigation because they are 'successful'...I see.....well, I always thought so but its refreshing to hear you say it straight out. So we are all 'pigs' in the pink floyd parlance and deserve to be, what? Put down?

No, America is not going to turn into France. Isn't France a perennial whipping boy for being pussies militarily and snobs culturally? I get the idea that we're generally not looking up to them. Who exactly is advocating that France is a good economic model? Or is this whole premise a strawman for a different argument?
It's not France we're being modelled after, it's Europe in general. You can't deny the fact that America is headed in that socialist direction. I just hope to God that can't be accomplished before Obama's term is over... Then maybe we can get a Republican back in and turn America back into America, not a suburban version of Europe.

I like the country better when you have to work to achieve goals, not when the government feels bad for you and then sends you MY money to "fix" YOUR problems.

Man, you have a SERIOUS problem with reading comprehension there. Those for whom English is their first language would have had no trouble understanding that that's the exact OPPOSITE of what I was saying; that "them" represented a very restricted category that did NOT include successful businesspeople or professionals who make six figure incomes.

Now I realize that English isn't your first language -- one has only to struggle through one of your typical garbled, hashwritten posts to get that clue -- but still, I think you might make a little better effort than this.

really?

By "the rich," of course, I don't mean merely the well-off professional types with six-figure incomes, or small business people who have managed to become successful..

Merely = simply, purely , just....

how is that not inclusive of the "them" we are discussing i.e. the "rich"?

I have already explained what I meant by it. Confusing the meaning once can be an innocent error of reading comprehension. Continuing to confuse it after being corrected is deliberate obfuscation.

You make me very much wish I could put a moderator on ignore.

If you didn't mean, merely and you meant to say ;” I don't mean” them as in "well-off professional types with six-figure incomes, or small business people who have managed to become successful". You just could have said so absent the rest….

As I said, I already explained what I meant. You have no further excuse for misunderstanding. If you continue along these lines, you will be calling me a liar.

The best thing the government could do in the face of this simple market correction is nothing.

Were we faced with nothing more than a "simple market correction" I would agree with you completely. The problem is that, in addition to Americans losing over $11 TRILLION in personal net worth, others around the world have experienced similar losses, and there is the immediate threat of a world-wide shutdown of the banking system--with further losses, layoffs, and genuine human suffering to immediately follow.

Governments are forced to act simply because there are no other entities which might be able to deal with economic problems on such a scale--and the governments may not be able to pull it off either--but they have to try.

That is the difference between us I guess. Europeans aren´t expecting the governement to make their problems go away but to get something in return for their taxes , like free education, affordable health care etc.
Because it is YOUR money you can also demand something.......

Re: France--rioting--over economic crisis--government not doing enough to fix crisis!

This happens almost every spring in France; its tradition now. In 2008 it was over algerian immigration, 2007 over LAbour Reform bills. Note the back of civil protest in any other European country. This thread is similar to the one a month or two back that claimed the university occupations in the UK where over socalism (they wern't, they where over Gaza).

as for copying Europe; sounds like a good mood to me. I know where I'd prefer to live.
