Probably because of the mind-control that came first.

And the power companies want more "Smart-Grid" capability, with access through LAN's and WAN's to redistribute power more efficiently. I think we need to secure the network first, before adding more options.

I'm not sure of the particulars of this, but I have a certain interest myself, in "grid feedback", I'll call it. Basically, I think that the "smart grid" ideas are more "downstream" in terms of individual grid users having more nuanced control and the ability to interact more intelligently with the grid as a whole. As far as I know, the entire thing would only be a function of end-users receiving "broadcast" info from the power grid, and adjusting their use accordingly. There would be no mutual exchange of information - no way for me to "log in" to the grid.

But, I'm not an expert at that level. And, if what they want is to give people network access to controlling the grid, I agree with you that such a move would be completely misguided. And I would take it one step further and say this would even apply if they did "secure" it. The only way to secure your computer from attack is to turn it off and unplug it. Barring that, unplug it from the internet and keep the door to your home locked.

Same principle applies here. The risk is simply too high for the convenience.
