And the power companies want more "Smart-Grid" capability, with access through LAN's and WAN's to redistribute power more efficiently. I think we need to secure the network first, before adding more options.

And I would take it one step further and say this would even apply if they did "secure" it. The only way to secure your computer from attack is to turn it off and unplug it. Barring that, unplug it from the internet and keep the door to your home locked. Same principle applies here. The risk is simply too high for the convenience.
