Yeah, I would hope that people won't be too shocked by this - we ain't in third gear yet.

We spent so much time corrupting our foundation that the jobless really do have no place else to go - it's all service industy stuff: if nobody comes to the hotel, there's nothing for anybody to do - and they can't be held up forever.

Now when this group starts drawing unemployment from a fund that is supplied by printed money (the ink of which isn't yet dry), that draw will further decrease the value of the dollar. Gas is back up after the Olympics in China and the goverment imposed rationing to cut down on polution. Mortages are failing every day. Wages are way down and area costs of living are still way up - because profit taking is legal under most any circumstances -(cough).

I greatly appreciate what the president is trying to do, but sometimes the best way to beat an out of control fire, is to let it burn itself out.

So let me get this straight, Bush and his republican cronies spent too much on Iraq (a point I don't dispute) but Obama would fix the problem if it weren't for those evil republicans who remain stopping him from spending more?

Silly me, I always thought that the solution to destructive behavior was to stop the destructive behavior.

So I guess if you get the clap, and the doctor prescribes anti-biotics, and it doesn't go away the first day, you stop taking the pills, because they obviously aren't working..................

If you take the pills for six months and there aren't any signs of it going away (in fact, it's still getting worse), then I think it's time for a new prescription.

It's been longer than just six months even. Consider that the bailouts and stimulus checks began under Bush. (One of my big beefs with Bush)

Inflation here we come...socialist programs in the middle of a recession, coupled by spending programs is the most effective way to be sure
you have an equally worse inflation after a recession.

Yeah, I know, but for some reason these guys think Obama's policy is different from what Bush supported with the first stimulus and TARP.

My statement was as inaccurate as the one I quoted.

Six months is not a very long time to turn an economy around that is heading into total collapse.
If we hadn't done anything, by now you would have seen the collapse of the banking sector, the collapse of the insurance sector, which would have cut economic activity by a considerable amount more than it has fallen and unemployment would have been in the double digits a few months ago.
And of course, with that drop in economic activity, and the resulting drop in tax revenues, coupled with much higher unemployment, food stamp and welfare spending, we'd still have that huge deficit that you are all of a sudden so worried about.

Deficit spending is a drug, when you need to do it, like now, it's medicine, when you don't need to do it (like Bush's tax cuts) it's just gettin' high.

We still have come no where near the level of spending that we hit during WWII, which pulled the country out of the last Great Depression.
And most of the 787 Billion in stimulus money hasn't been spent yet.

And the point the right totally misses in their pathetic attempts to smear Obama, is that it doesn't matter if the stimulus fails, we end up just as fucked as if we didn't do anything, but the stimulus at least gives us the opportunity to come out of this period with an economy that isn't a smoking wreck.

Please don't try to lecture me about something you know very little about and something I know a great deal about. I'm getting a little tired of it.

I've seen a great many of your posts, and they are long on criticism, and short on alternative proposals.
You whine about school spending, as though an educated populace is no different from an uneducated populace.
You whine about infrastructure spending, as though commerce flows through a broken infrastructure as easily as it functions in an intact functioning infrastructure.

So what would you actually do if you were president?

Remembering that you are stuck with the system of government and the laws as they currently stand.

In a word...nothing.

When the govt confiscates your income, that's when you no longer have any capital. The ONLY way Obama can get us out of the mess he has created is to raise taxes. That is proven time and time again to make things worse.

Capital is created, not borrowed. And if you don't let the people who have the means to create the capital keep their money, you have no capital. We will never be sending rent checks to China. More likely we will default on our obligations and they will have to suck it up. Funny thing is that they are now stuck in a catch 22. If they stop buying our treasuries we need to sell them in order to pay the interest on the treasuries they already own and the principal on the ones that are matured, they will only f*** themselves since we will then default on what we owe them. It's not like they can just come over here and take the State of California. Although they can have it...it doesn't work that way.
What the hell is the relationship between people defaulting on their mortgages and the price of real estate? If someone defaults, someone else buys it. There may be losses from trashing and stigmatised props but that only lasts one turnover and really should be minimal if the bank has decent REO services. Real estate prices fell because they had been inflated out of all proportion by the bubble in mortgage derivatives, which can be laid squarely and precisely at the feet of the Republican Congress of 1999.

Capital is...created??? From what? by who? Is this a religious tract? Are entreprenueur's all gods now? "I want to start a business" " How will you pay for it?" " Oh, I'm creating the capital tonight, we're having a ceremony, some candles and wine coolers, and then I pray to Adam Smith and tomorrow there will be $10,000 in my bank, you should come."

Bullshit. The Cap and Trade if full of takebacks and passthrus which all the Republicans are conveniently ignoring totally. It will cost an average family an estimated $245 annually according to a bipartisan committee that did a study, but I guess that's just too much to keep on being able to breathe the air.

When I was in Real Estate they used to tell us to beware of contractors. "most contractors would build Trump Tower in the middle of the Gobi Desert if they could get financing"

Here, apparently, is a contractor.

Oh, okay. So, Obama lied about Iraq withdrawals and is spending our money on the all important smoking cessation programs, and that is all Bush's fault? So, Bush got everyone addicted to cigarettes?

Okay john. I'll explain it and be brief. When the bank takes a house, it will get rid of it at almost any price. Banks don't want to own the real estate. They don't "loan to own". By the time they have foreclosed and sold the house, they have lost a minimum of 20% of the original value. (That's why they like to see 20% down so the buyer losses, not the bank...see how that works?) So it's called a fire sale. When your neighbors house sells for less than they paid for it, the value of your house goes down as well. Now, one foreclosure in your town isn't going to bring down the values in the whole town. But 50 or 500 will and thousands devastate the market. The problem was that a lot of people stopped paying their mortgages. It snowballed into what we have today. Derivatives have nothing to do with the value of homes. People buying and selling the homes determine the value. Banks, insurance companies and investment companies have nothing to do with that. They only facilitate a purchase that has already been agreed upon.

Yup, capital is created. Go to business school. They'll show you how.

Shouldn't you have asked how you yourself will pay for it? And to that I will defer back to my previous statement.
