I served for 20 years, and have served with guys (and women) who were gay.

I had no problem with them. They did their work, and they did it well; usually better than the straight sailors who worked for me.

Anyone who thinks gays shouldn't serve in the military has never served with a gay person in the military...

As a Supervisor, gays presented no particular problems for me. They did their work; more often than not better than the straight guys, and they were largely not harrassed by the straight guys...

From a purely political perspective, this is a sensitive issue for the Dems; the idea of treating the military as a social experiment does not go over well, especially when the US military is on the front lines.

Obama and the left wing Dems have to be careful to avoid the perception that they are at odds with - and in opposition to - the military. That is the reputation of the left, and they have often deliberately fostered that in the past.

Obama's primary difficulty now is that he is clearly and openly associated with the left, after running as a moderate and as a centrist.

The White House and the leaders in congress are entirely responsible for that. Deliberately pandering to a vocal and litigious left-wing interest group is not a good idea at this point if Obama is going to attempt to work with anyone outside the left.

The whole world of political correctness, with its special Victim Groups and claims of 'oppression', is losing popularity at a time of recession, unemployment and war. There is far more patience with that type of demand in a period of peace and prosperity.

A Gay Czar?

The homosexual mafia had better come to realize are rapidly becoming as taken for granted and ignored as the NAALCP, and stop basing their political identity around a fetish. The largest growing demographic, Hispanics, are not going to let Obama get away with it. No on is out to get them.

But now you're comparing apples to oranges. If you want to compare southerners to gays, then it would be a comparison between banning southerners from being open about being southerners and banning gays from being open about being gay (DADT).

I would imagine that banning southern openness would have a similar effect except that "southernness" would be a bit harder to conceal. It would just fuck southerners for no reason than to make intolerant gays and blacks happy.

In any case, how can you really say banning open gayness has not harmed the military? To which point are you comparing it? Have gays ever been allowed in the military and were they allowed to be open about it? In any case, banning gay openness and southern openness has roughly the same effect: it makes the military less appealing to each respective group. When you know your benefits can get fucked for being open or that you will have to keep a secret, it becomes less interesting.

The question is, should people who reveal such information be treated as gays who admit they're gay?
