GOP had secret meeting on innauguration night to figure out how to grind country to a halt

Democrats condemn GOP's plot to obstruct Obama as 'appalling and sad' | World news | guardian.co.uk

Democrats have rounded on revelations about a private dinner of House Republicans on inauguration day in 2009 in which they plotted a campaign of obstruction against newly installed president Barack Obama.

During a lengthy discussion, the senior GOP members worked out a plan to repeatedly block Obama over the coming four years to try to ensure he would not be re-elected.

The disclosures – described as "appalling and sad" by Obama's chief strategist David Axelrod – undermine Republican claims that the president alone is to blame for the partisan deadlock in Washington.

A detailed account of who was present at the dinner on that January 20 night and the plan they worked out to bring down Obama is provided by Robert Draper in 'Do Not Ask What Good We Do: Inside the US House of Representatives', published this week.

In his book, Draper opens with the heady atmosphere in Washington on the days running up to the inauguration and the day itself, which attracted 1.8 million to the mall to witness Obama being sworn in as America's first black president.

Those numbers contributed to a growing sense of unease among Republicans as much the defeat in the White House race the previous November. The 15 Republicans were in a sombre mood as they gathered at the Caucus Room in Washington, an upscale restaurant where a New York strip steak costs $51.

Attending the dinner were House members Eric Cantor, Jeb Hensarling, Pete Hoekstra, Dan Lungren, Kevin McCarthy, Paul Ryan and Pete Sessions. From the Senate were Tom Coburn, Bob Corker, Jim DeMint, John Ensign and Jon Kyl. Others present were former House Speaker and future – and failed – presidential candidate Newt Gingrich and the Republican strategist Frank Luntz, who organised the dinner and sent out the invitations.

The dinner table was set in a square at Luntz's request so everyone could see one another and talk freely. The session lasted four hours and by the end the sombre mood had lifted: they had conceived a plan. They would take back the House in November 2010, which they did, and use it as a spear to mortally wound Obama in 2011 and take back the Senate and White House in 2012, Draper writes.

"If you act like you're the minority, you're going to stay in the minority," said Keven McCarthy, quoted by Draper. "We've gotta challenge them on every single bill and challenge them on every single campaign."

The Republicans have done that, bringing Washington to a near standstill several times during Obama's first term over debt and other issues.
Axe tweeted that "This is sad, appalling but not terribly surprising" and he is right. These revelations are the first time we have actual evidence for the American people to see that the GOP has put country last, and party first and tried to grind the entire country to a halt. Keep in mind this night was during a month where 800,000 jobs were lost and the economy was about to go off a cliff. These pieces of work were plotting on how to make sure that Obama would not succeed in making things better for Americans - not because they disagreed with him - but because they were mad they lost the election. After these revelations I don't see how people can, in good conscience, support this party.

To be boring, I'm not surprised, but when are people going to realize that both parties do the same?

As a general principle I agree with you. But at this time the dems are too fractured and their leadership too weak to carry out such a plan.

I agree. The Dems aren't capable of this. Didn't they go along with the repeal of Glass Steagull and the Iraq war among other major GOP initiatives with profound implications for the country.

Whatever happened to speaking truth to power? What about votes of conscience, of going your own way... even 'sticking it to the man'?

Oh yeah... I forgot... that only applies when it's something that you want. Dennis Kucinich voting no in a GOP led House is noble... Paul Ryan voting no in a Democratic led House is Evil.

Pathetic... even your whines have gotten... whinny.

On the matter of 'the Democrats couldn't do this' If they are, as you claim, incapable of being an efficient minority party, why ever would anyone want to give them a majority?

Every time I hear Romney whine about how bad the economy's done under Obama, I remember how the GOP voted against measures to improve it, time after time after time.

    That's the thing.
I believe from what I've witnessed over the last 11 years that a Republican president will make things worse for people who are barely making it.

If you are trying to equate the two parties in order to further a naive and uninformed position that there's no difference between the two parties, let me suggest this:

Democrats brought health insurance to millions of uninsured Americans.
Republicans couldn't care less about the uninsured, and try to repeal Obamacare every chance they get.

Democrats want taxes to be higher on those who can afford it, in order to fund programs for those who need them.
Republicans are happy to drive the deficit sky-high in order to slash taxes on the already rich, while slashing spending on the needy, including children.

    Democrats believe in science.
Republicans believe in their own ideology.

Democrats want women to have access to health care and reproductive services, including contraception.
Republicans want to close down Planned Parenthood.

Democrats believe the government needs to regulate business.
Republicans believe business can be trusted not to pour PCBs into our drinking water, stuff our skies full of greenhouse gasses, and exploit workers in order to maximize their short-term profits.

But getting back to the specifics of this particular case, please identify the last time the nation was facing a grave crisis and the Democrats decided to do everything to block the majority from doing anything about the crisis, one unanimous vote after another.
    Oh, and please be specific.

No, they didn't "go along" with the repeal of Glass-Stragal, Danny. They actively supported it in exchange for campaign donations. Remember the OpenSecrets article?

The Democrats aren't some saintly bunch being victimized by evil Republicans, no matter how often you try to spin that yarn.

Because it's unconstitutional, as well as the fact it can't be paid for.

Said programs who "need" them can't be funded.

I see nothing but the denial of science by the Democratic party. Not that the Republican party is much better.

Planned Parenthood should receive zero federal funding. If they can survive on private donations, go ahead. The services you whine about are available at any local health department already, and we fund that.

Regulation doesn't work, all it does is create a push-me-pull-you in knee jerk after knee jerk reaction from idiots in Washington with no clue what they're doing. And yes, requiring people to actually work for the salary they're paid is exploiting them.

Pick a budget, any budget the Republican congress has sent to the Senate since 2010.

Pro: My son is still on my health plan and there is no pre-existing condition nonsense to be concerned about.
Con: The cost has sky-rocketed and more and more medications are not covered

Pro: a few months after Obama got elected I received a call from Wells-Fargo that Obama's administration has declared IT a dead field and they were forced to modify my loan; this saved my house.

Con: I want out of the WTO. China is NOT in the WTO and is one of the two most favored nations we deal with; I want our jobs back.
