    Romney Chooses Ryan

Now I almost want to vote after all. I just wish the ticket was reversed. And if the Dems want to have a debate about medicare, I am more than happy to have it. Ryan is full of ideas, and not afraid to take tough issues on. He is going to demolish Biden in the debates, and everyone else in every interview he shows up in. If the Reps lose, Ryan will be positioned to win the Presidency in 2016. If they win, he will be President in 2020. Ths is now a given.

The only worrying thing here, is what personal attacks the Dems will come up with. Harry Reid has a source that Ryan once killed a man, just to watch him die.

NORFOLK, Va.—Mitt Romney picked Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate Saturday, a decision that could spark enthusiasm for the Republican ticket among conservatives and all but ensures the election will turn to deep philosophical divisions between the two parties over spending, taxes and entitlements.

In Mr. Ryan, 42 years old, the Romney campaign gets a conservative who has spent recent years at the center of national debates about the size and scope of the federal government. With his proposals to revamp entitlement programs for future retirees and the poor, he has become a hero to conservatives and a target for liberals.

Mr. Romney told Beth Myers—his long-time adviser who was the head of the vice-presidential search—on Aug. 1 that he wanted Mr. Ryan as his running mate. He then called Mr. Ryan and asked to get together, according to an aide.

The pick was officially announced on Mr. Romney's phone app just after 7 a.m., two hours before Mr. Romney was to speak on the USS Wisconsin, which carries the name of Rep. Ryan's home state.

That should make the race a little more interesting than if Romney had gone with Portman or Pawlenty. I like Ryan's tone and demeanor. This is more-or-less the pick many people expected given Romney's position: slightly down in the polls but not desperate. Ryan's a bit of a risk, but not a huge one.

I'm not so sure he'll crush Biden in the VP debate though. He looks young and he sometimes talks like an economics professor. Biden looks old and has a down-home, folksy dialect. When it comes to changing medicare, I expect that seniors will identify much more closely with Biden than with Ryan. That could hurt, potentially.

But Ryan is far smarter, better looking, and nicer. And it wont ONLY be about medicare. I agree though, there is something to be had for the amount of sarcasm and snark the Dems will bring to a debate.

I could beat Joe Biden in a debate... Ryan will eviscerate him. Remember what Ryan did to Obama in the healthcare 'summit' back in 2009.

Activists on the right have been calling for Ryan for most of the last two weeks, so this is not a huge surprise, but it is a little all the same.

Ryan is a good choice in my book.

At first, I was unsure of Ryan, but have always admired his passion and intensity on the senate floor. He articulates very, very well and will definitely give the Republican ticket a huge boost. He will also blow Joe Biden away in the debates.

    A good, solid choice.

We'll know for sure just how good a pick he is by the directly proportional level and intensity of the whining from liberals.

    Oh no! Ryan?

And Biden will show Ryan up for what he is, in any debate. Not that Biden would technically win any debate with Ryan, but you don't really have to win a debate to show up Ryan for what the man really is. Biden has the ability to appeal to voters, especially older voters on the gut level, the emotional level, and this means more than Ryan's debating skills.

This may have worked in 2008...but it will not work anymore. There are way too many foreclosures and record unemployment to be taken in by folksy demeanors and soaring rhetoric. The time has come for real change - which could only happen with a new administration.

Oh come on. Biden is a punchline. No one takes him seriously. Ryan is a huge contrast to that, someone who is very smart, has a lot of solutions, and is also very personable in a real way.

And what, according to you, IS Ryan that Biden will show?

I do NOT like that he voted against a house bill (failed) that would have removed the indefinite military detention language from NDAA 2012. And by association, I imagine he voted for NDAA 2012 in its constitution-mangling entirety.

But, other than that (with an admittedly surface perusal on Project Vote Smart) I did not see anything else to significantly disagree with.

The one really important thing here is that Ryan gives Republicans confidence in voting, where they were not excited about Romney. Which means turnout.

Im sure he has any number of votes that will make his conservatism look inconsistent. While I think his plans are practical and far better than the current system, I dont like that they propose trillions in borrowing. Hes still a Republican, a career politician, and someone who has barely any real world experience. Hes not the ideal representative for me, but his philosophy is sound.

Paul Ryan, the guy who wants to end Medicare and Social Security?
With the Baby Boomers approaching retirement and Social Security and Medicare growing in importance in their universe.
The GOP just lost the old fart vote, and that is a key part of their coalition.
But he could have done worse, he could have asked Palin.
