Congress: Approval at 14% / 87% in US disapprove of Congress

Congress' Approval Rating Just Sank To A Record-Breaking Low

I think its fucking golden. Seems like the american people appreciates the Tea Party Downgrade and how John Boner orchestrated the Grand Finale of the Debt Ceiling Ape Circus. I guess that happens if you try to teabag the american public.

I predict that in about one year, a republican led congress will archieve a one digit approval rating for the first time in american history.

Re: Republican led Congress: Approval at 14%

Um... Republicans lead the House, Democrats sill have majority (granted not 60 votes worth) in the Senate. The poll suggests what it should, they are not getting much done due to politics over really addressing issues. And while that is an issue, it is not exclusive to the Republican party in cause.

    Try again.

"Congress" doesn't run for elections... 468 people (more or less) do, and then only in their state/district.

    Big difference.

Congress' Job Approval Rating Worst in Gallup History

Look at the pre Nov 2010 charts. The second one down shows very little change in approval unless you're a dem after Nov 2010.

The OP has nothing new as far as news, congress' approval rating has been in the toilet for a long time now.

Everyone hates congress, except for the representative they voted into office.

You mean the Democrat downgrade? I mean...they are the ones that didn't pass anything until the last second.

Downgrade, is because of debt, no debt no downgrade. Obama is the president and the buck stops with him, not some T-Party.

re: Congress: Approval at 14% / 87% in US disapprove of Congress

Without getting overly partisan here, does anyone have any ideas how to restore the trust in the American elected officials?

Having a larger voting base would work. Right now politicians pay more attention to the smaller numbers of people who vote disproportionately higher than other segments. Seniors come to mind here.

Having term limits would also work. Politicians are always running for re-election more than trying to do the right thing. Perhaps longer terms with limits on the number of times a politician can be re-elected in a row?

Campaign finance reform would also be needed. Right now the current system strongly favours the incumbent.

I’d also pay a politician more. That’s right more. Make it worthwhile for competent people to run for office and be in charge of the billions that politicians are responsible for. Talent follows money.

I do not have much hope for massive changes as the people who benefit the most, the current incumbents, would be the ones to change the rules and I do not see them acting against their own self interests.
I always find it strange that only reasonable people agree with me.

And they earned every point of it, but what do they care? The members of congress most responsible for the dismal figure are completely dug in back in their districts.

These two ideas would be a good start IMO

Other folks could vote, turn up to meetings, contribute to hearings and keep in touch with their elected representatives.

Nothing keeps most non-voters from voting beyond stupidity, apathy, and inertia.

Removing the power of Congress and the Senate to investigate themselves may go a long way to rebuilding confidence. I'm damn sick of seeing congressmen shenanigans taking years to investigate and "resolve".

The obvious answer is to vote for trustworthy officials!

Acceptance voting would get more people to vote, since their vote would actually count. But politicians would never allow that.

Another good idea they'd never allow.

Agreed. Although anything passed by politicians would inevitably favor incumbants and/or the ruling parties, so we need not so much 'reform' as 'deregulation'. Not Completely, but something in that direction...

Not a bad call, though it'd be cheaper and better to reduce the billions they're in charge of.

Exactly. They do not represent the people. They represent themselves, their party, their major supporters, their voters, and Then the people.

True, but if you gave them choices and a voice in the outcome, I bet a lot more would turn out. Right now they are by law usually restricted to two bad choices, and by law usually end up with one of the two bad choices even if there are others. If it were no longer against the law to elect a good official, we'd have more good officials.

And seldom if ever getting anything but a slap on the wrist at that. But what better system is there? Letting the executive branch take care of it opens the way to partisan witchhunts.
    Today's forecast: Government corruption.
Tomorrow's forecast: 100% chance of more 'politics as usual'

Maybe it's finally time to vote Libertarian
