LoKid, why not?

I recently saw a commercial for LoJack, the radio device that enables police to locate stolen cars with satellite locators. My understanding is that very few cars that have it are successfully stolen for long.

According to this over 800,000 children are reported missing every year

Now why couldn't we have something like LoKid, a device put in every child at the hospital that would do the same thing? I hear they have them for dogs and they work fine.

Can anybody explain why everyone blanches at this idea? I realize there are privacy concerns, but do they trump the lives of at least several tens of thousands of children annually?

The problem with this is privacy issues.

Re: LoKid, why not?

There's a huge potential for abuse once the child is doing things on their own that a "big brother" type of government would want to prevent. They do, however, make shoes, wristbands, and little tags that can simply be slipped into a child's pocket. If I had children I would strongly consider the shoes as the best option since the wristband would be noticed and removed and the tags could easily be lost.
