I dont have a problem with who MSNBC hires as long as they are honest about their employees bias in reporting the news. Now they are hiring Rachel Maddow for a 9pm time slot show (against Hannity and Colmes), thus completing their liberal evening. I think its pretty interesting how the various cable news channels are becoming partisan, and hiring people based on political views rather than journalist credibility. Thoughts?

Oh and apparently one of the reasons they hired here was her "military expertise". I have failed to find anything to back that up though. I assume shes against the Iraq war, and perhaps in MSNBC's eyes, that makes her an expert.

I'm disappointed by the move. Dan Abrams had a good show with "Verdict". While I like Rachel Maddow, I'm saddened that a contributing factor for this change was because she has a more partisan slant.

Well, theres a fine line between the coporation being biased, and doing what in its financial interests. It depends on the what the goal of the corp is. If it is to inform people of facts, then Rachel is a bad hire. If it is to convince people of a ideology, then shes a good fit. If they claim they are doing the former, when they are doing the latter, then we should have a bad opinion of them if we look to the media to point out the facts.

Since FOX will inevitably come up, im not sure what their goal is. I would say they have a mix, to inform and convince. Their news reporting seems balanced to me, but their talking heads are decidely conservative, or at least less liberal.

How about this explaination: she got many people watching, and that's what MSNBC wants. If MSNBC put a conservative on they would probably have to cancel his/her show a few months later.

this is an ideology move IMO MSNBC has been in the tank for Obama since day one , all you have to do is watch old Count down to see its all about the dems on MSNBC

How does one show demonstrate the bias of an entire network?

Especially when it's clearly an opinion show?

MSNBC has developed its schedule as a left-wing answer to Fox. That determines who they hire.

It has only been partially successful. Those on the left have a very long list of options to choose from among the mainstream media sources. Conservative media developed as a response to the left-wing ideological bias in the mainstream. The result is a robust alternative media.

MSNBC has very little chance of long term success, as the potential audience can find what they want elsewhere. There is no need for a left-wing alternative media because, with a handful of exceptions, they are the status quo.

I bet just the opposite. FOX has a lot of viewers because they have more conservative commentators. Were MSNBC to have similar representation they would no doubt steal viewers from FOX. I know I would watch a more rational conservative at 8 on MSNBC vs Orelliey on FOX. In fact, I watch Glenn Beck on CNNHN. I watch Joe Scarbourough in the morning on MSNBC vs FOX.

And he was actually more left of conservative when I saw him on TV. Probably was just him though. But I did tune in sometimes partly because he was conservative. They just have to get the right mix of opinion and style.
