Kobe Bryant- 'Our Country Is the Best' (Olympics interview)

wow, nice to see, appreciation always warms my heart....good for him.

Collinsworthless looks like a goofball, I have a feeling it may never have ocurred to him....never thought he was much of a receiver anyway...

Assorted TV commentators keep opining that the Olympics are all about the brotherhood of man, rather than national ambition or patriotism. But don't tell that to the fanatically nationalist Chinese -- or to Kobe Bryant, the NBA star who is playing with Team USA in Beijing.

In an interview Friday on NBC, the world's most famous basketball player told Chris Collinsworth how he got "goosebumps" when he received his Olympics uniform. "I actually just looked at it for a while. I just held it there and I laid it across my bed and I just stared at it for a few minutes; just because as a kid growing up this is the ultimate, ultimate in basketball." The Los Angeles Laker went on to call the U.S. "the greatest country in the world. It has given us so many great opportunities, and it's just a sense of pride that you have; that you say, 'You know what? Our country is the best.'"

Mr. Collinsworth seemed either startled or impressed by such sentiment, and asked, "Is that a cool thing to say in this day and age? That you love your country, and that you're fighting for the red, white and blue? It seems sort of like a day gone by."

To which Mr. Bryant replied: "No, it's a cool thing for me to say. I feel great about it, and I'm not ashamed to say it. I mean, this is a tremendous honor."
Cynics will claim that this is merely about marketing, with Mr. Bryant hoping to use the Games to burnish his public image. On the other hand, he and his rich teammates on the basketball squad are giving up their offseason to play for nothing save possible medals. Mr. Bryant has also been an enthusiastic spectator for other U.S. Olympians, waving the Stars and Stripes at various events.
To the kind of Americans who consider themselves primarily "citizens of the world," nationalism at the Olympics is déclassé, even embarrassing. We're with Kobe.

Good on him. Shame he had to say it at a games where for the first time in over a decade we won't win the most golds but still, what he said was well spoken.

Re: Kobe Bryant- 'Our Country Is the Best' (Olympics interview)

The Olympics is supposed to be about coming together and competing for the sake of competition rather than pitting nations against one another, but the pride of winning is fully attached to national pride and anyone who doesn't think their country is the best available should be actively trying to change it or leave. I can root for athletes of other countries when I feel that athlete deserves a win, but when it comes down to it, it's America I want to see succeed and there's nothing wrong with that.

I can understand his point of view. A country that would pay me millions to play basketball, and reveres me like a rockstar would be my pick too. Oh, any country that lets me get away with forceable rape helps also.

No, don't say that! Otherwise we'll have the whole world knocking at our doorstep.

The Bejing games may be known in history as the fake games.
ESPN - ESPN The Magazine

China is winning many of their golds because this is what typically happens when you host the games.

They know the venues better, they have the crowd on their side, but it seems they also have the help of the judges in sports like boxing and gymnastics where they are able to take a few golds away from the US by rigging the points totals.

If everyone was following the rules several of the gold medals China has won in gymnastics would be removed because many of their gymnasts are under aged. You have to be 16 to compete and several of them are still sporting their baby teeth. Yet even allowing this many of the high scores that have been posted for substandard performances by Chinese gymnasts have regularly shocked announcers and even the crowd at the events.

The Olympics is about national pride to most countries. That is why there is so much cheating.

Personally I would like to know why all of the sudden Jamaica has so many athletes winning speed events. How can such a small country with such a tiny population, 2.8 million, less then many US cities, be so dominant in so many events both men and women? Everyone else seems to be running in slow-motion.

If it is legit then I welcome it, but if something is going on it needs to be exposed.

I guess this is no longer about sports as its in here but i do agree with you on this one, there is something awful fishy about this games.

I did expect China to win the most golds by far but all the WR's that have been smashed leave me wondering about air quality and chemical imbalances. (Also i've read a couple of state department memo's thatare showing concerns about the health status of folks who have obtained Visa's to go there).

Also having fake ceremonies, 9 year old gymnists etc doesn't help.

But most shocking is the tally of gold medals the limee's have, there is no way the British can ever legitimately win 20 in a games!

Firstly, he was found innocent. Secondly, is there a kind of rape which isn't forceable?

I don't see what the big deal is. Everyone thinks their country is the greatest. I think the Irish Republic is the greatest.

not here my friend, saying something like that (did you watch the video) is not "cool", we are supposed to be lambasted constantly in public by any and all, as evil empire builders and oppressors who belong in the 9th ring...for someone like Kobe to say that, is news.

No, I didn't watch the video. I just come from a background where not loving your country - whether or not you agree with it's politics - is considered odd.
