A gigantic project that is supposed to be the hugest mosque in Germany that will change the historical skyline of Cologne/ Germany forever has been kicked of after many quarrels but finally sucessful negotiations with DITIB, an organisation close to the turkish governement claiming to represent the majority of religious Turks in Germany and running the most mosques.Protests from ordinary citizens as well as from the far right were overriden by the city councils decision yesterday........

We are at war with forces too terrible to comprehend. We cannot afford mercy for any of its victims too weak to take the correct course. Mercy destroys us; it weakens us and saps our resolve. Put aside all such thoughts. They are not worthy of those in the service of country.

What is sad in publicly showing that the turkish minority (since this is going to be a turkish, not an arabic mosque) is also part of contemporary Germany and as such also has the right to build mosques as long as it respects german law ? This shows that many Turks have left the immigrant ghettos and isn´t that the goal of integration policies ?

One thing I just read:

If that is true that's like €25.000-€35.000 per muslim in the entire state of Nordrhein-Westfalen, or €60.000-€80.000 per muslim in the greater Cologne area. That's huge. Luckely it's not public money.

Definitely, but the DITIB organisation is at least partially financed by the turkish governement. Probably money is also coming from there.

I like the design, it could become an architecture highlight of Köln.

I puzzle why the muslim community should be forbidden to have a representative building to live their religion. The arguments of todays mosques remind me at the arguments back in the Austrian monarchy against jewish temples. The largest of them, which still exists and is still the jewish communities largest temple in Vienna can' be seen from any side from the street, even though its not small at all. It had to be fided behind residential blocks because only Christian churches were allowed public presence.

It reminds me of the argument over the past few centuries in this country by 'real Dutchmen' (the people north of the rivers who prefer to live in swampy areas) against Catholics: their churches with big towers are ugly, and they breed like rabbits.

I'm not really outspoken on this issue: many religions are silly, but people should be able to build their temples/churches/mosks. And it does look like a beautiful building indeed. I'll certainly pay it a visit when its ready.

I mean protestants could find a lot of not so friendly but fitting descriptions, like over the top, wasteful etc... but ugly?

Thats the sole "mosque" in Vienna; The other localities for the over 100 000 Muslims in Vienna are only praying rooms.

They did fit into your cities before the reformation why should they don't fit into it anymore? Apart from that, I find religious in fights sad, but in fights between Protestants and Catholics are outright pathetic.

Well that's what the traditional, die hard intolerant Protestants were saying in the past.

Anyway have no problem with a mosque being build and in a way it also stands for the transformation of the Cologne district of Ehrenfeld.

Back in the 60's it was a run down quarter, considered dangerous, were drunkiards attacked each other with nail enforced planks and noone wanted to live.

Nowadays it's a hip, lively districit and highly popular amongst students.

By the way I think it's typical for the Colognian attitude of "Leve un leve loose" (Life and let live), that Germany's biggest mosque and Europe's biggest brothel can be found in the same district.

It appears there are 4 mosks in Eindhoven where I live, I could find these pictures of 2 of them, I guess the others are just normal buildings without a special look.

There are other, more questionable developments than this, for example the Saudi financed King Fahd acedemy in Bonn and I'm just not fine with children being educated with Saudi school books in Germany.
