I don't watch Letterman and wonder how many public figures who's infidelity he has slammed or made the butt of his feeble brand of jokes.

Ehhh... itīs kind of his job. Just as you a free to slam him on this. Only difference is that you donīt have the same kind of access to be on the air, thank God...

And usually the ones who get slammed are the ones who preach their beloved family values and then fail to live it. They deserve all the ridicule that gets thrown at them.

Which I support, that is his right to be a "no bounds" kind of guy. If people disapprove, talk out against it. If he crosses the line, feel free to use the court system in place for just that.

See, the system is working...

I used to like Letterman when I was in college 20 years ago, wathced him most every night. His humor was never political back then. Now that he has become the Rick Pitino of late-night TV, I will bet that Sarah Palin has his on-air confession tivo'd and is watching it over and over while dancing on her coffee table and shouting "You Betcha!" at the TV!

David Letterman just isn't that significant a figure in my life.

Hmm... I guess I haven't watched him the last few years just because I don't find him that funny. I think he's gotten worse over time.

But I do remember him making fun of every president....and generally picking on any political story that happened to be in the news. Which late night comedians stayed away from making Sarah Palin jokes?

Anyway, to imply that he's getting what he deserves is probably a correct assessment, but the reasons he deserves it is because of the fact that he cheated on his wife/partner......not because of his material or political views.

Re: David Letterman and Karma

I have always had a problem with "extortion" laws when there is no underlying crime involved. What I mean by this is, so what if he was "blackmailing" someone over a legal act they committed that is nonetheless embarassing? The person who has knowledge of it certainly has a right to blab it to however they want, and just as anyone else who enters into an otherwise lawful contract, he is merely making an offer to someone to exchange things of value to one another (in this case silence over something embrassing, but not criminal, for money).

If I find out a famous person is screwing around on their wife, I can go sell that information, and any proof I have to a tabloid, but I can't sell my silence? Just doesn't make sense to me.

That is very different in my view from extorting someone if you have knowledge of a criminal act, then you are becoming an active participant in covering up a crime after the fact, and that is a crime in and of itself.

I agree--there has to be more to this than meets the eye.

Iīm no lawyer, but my guess it is has to do with the implied threat. "You will do as I say and pay x amount of dollars, or else"...

I donīt know. My guess...

yes I see that and agreed for instance that though Clinton the dope lied, not that I think he should have been impeached for boffing Monica etc. , but that certainly turned up the heat. It was between him and Hillary and anyone at home who gives that kind of thing cachet.

I think the thinking is, hey if I aint preachy I don’t need to be moral or held accountable, so back off...and so it goes.

I dont see how the two names end up in the same sentence.

It's none of our damn business who he has been having sex with, thats between him and his wifey. And before anyone goes off about how when a republican or whoever screws and people scream about, its a bit different when you preach morals but dont practice what you preach. Regardless, not trying to bring politics into this.

And thats all.
I don't want to see your avatar agan so I'll just skulk off....

He was single, there was no infidelity. Since when is dating someone from the office off limits? Most of the married couples I know met at work.

I understand that, but it is not a threat of bodily harm, it is not even a threat to commit an illegal act against the person. If, instead of asking for money, the person just went and laughed at him and told him he was gonna tell the world and there was nothing he could do about it, THAT would be legal. If in response Letterman offered to pay him for his silence unsolicited and he accepted, THAT would be legal. So, why not if he just asks for money for his silence?
