If your born in America then you're an American, your race, culture or country of origin is not important when describing someone..

Only racists present people "_______ - Americans" because obviously they actually value the persons race more then the actual person.

Also, TV is amusing but should never be used to "learn" anything. Everything on TV these days has an agenda, even educational programs.
You can choose to be called whatever you like but you don't have the right to choose for anyone else how they should be described. If you're born in America wouldn't America be your country of origin? Again, it is not up to you to decide if a person's cultural background is important or not to their description of themselves.

You must not be watching the correct TV programs to facilitate your learning. May I suggest Sesame Street?

Oooh, Oooh, I want to be called a Spacepope-American!

You're going to address me as a Spacepope-American from now on, right?

(And yes, I just might possibly be reptilian. So there.)

We might just end up with a prince-like moniker (can anyone draw us a symbol?) ......... The countrymen formerly known as Americans.

the goal is not to ignore race issues...the goal is to grow as a species to a point where those issues no longer exist.

normally you'd think that wouldn't have to be explicitly spelled out.

There will always be irrational people who base their opinions on irrational factors.

Your way it will be impossible to ever, ever reach the goal unless we dip into my spacepope-american armory of mind control rays.

My way we will eventually forget, for the most part, that the differences even matter.

Re: What is it with CNN and race?

Something I often wonder about is Obama's racial thing. He's our first "black" president, a black man, black yada yada yah. So his white half must have got chunked in the dumpster or lost in the mail, best I can tell. Now what if Obama had been half black, half hispanic............would he still be our first "black" president?
All I can say is that is the black side of Obama's ancestry had been discarded like they did the white half, we'd have some angry people on our hands.

Assume it does, because it does. If you're not judging someone by their race, then what difference does it make what race they are? Would you treat two people differently if one was black and one was white? If so, well, doesn't that make you a racist, by the strictest definition of the word?

Put differently, what racial issue can possibly exist if race becomes seen only as a piece of medical data?

Or are we just blurring the line between race and culture?

People don't generally call a person who has a black parent and a white parent "white".

I'm not sure you can flip this one on it's head. Not everything can be turned into a reverse corollary.

I thought the current politically correct term is "mixed race". Maybe that only applies when the mixed race person hasn't reached some kind of pinnacle.

i do my best not to.

if race was indeed only seen as a piece of medical data, then you're right we could ignore race completely. we're not there yet, though, and i agree with you: i don't think we'll ever get completely there.
