Thread: Pedophile Guide author arrested

i support his arrest as long as it can be shown that he committed a crime. i'm not sure that's the case though. it says the judge found "probable cause" but i'm not sure what exactly he's being accused of. if he's just being accused of "distributing obscene materials" then i don't think i agree with his arrest.

"Greaves mailed what he referred to as his own personal copy of his book, signed, after being paid $50, to an address in Lakeland, Florida, within the jurisdiction of the Polk County Sheriff's Office,'' according to a written statement. "Detectives and attorneys reviewed the book, presented the material to Polk County Judge J. Michael McCarthy, who found probable cause that Greaves distributed obscene material depicting minors engaged in activities harmful to minors."

Yea, if the guy committed a crime, throw the book at him. Otherwise, I'd be pretty concerned if they guy was arrested just for making a screwed up book.

My understanding is that delivering it to a Florida address was a criminal act.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. It's possible the Postal Inspector can also bring charges for sending it through the mail.

i'm just curious what made it criminal though. it wasn't just the act of mailing something that was illegal, it was something about what he mailed that made it illegal. what was it about the book that constituted a criminal act under florida law?

That will depend on if a Florida jury finds that 'distributing' a "how to" book about fucking little kids is "obscene"

I'm betting that in Polk County they will.

I wonder if charges will also be brought against Amazon, for selling the book for two weeks, including in Kindle format. Seems like Greaves is being arrested for doing something no different than Amazon, unless I'm missing something. And hey, aren't corporations people or something?

The Florida warrant charged Greaves with distribution of obscene material depicting minors engaged in conduct harmful to minors, a third-degree felony.

I guess they need to arrest every other author who touched on the subject, such as best-selling author Stephen King.

In the horror novel "IT" by Stephen King, the 'losers club' gangbangs the young Beverly Marsh in the sewer.

I'm thinking this arrest violates the 1st amendment.

If the state of Florida still has pornography laws(apparently they have some semblance there of), and the person who purchased the book was in no way connected to law enforcement, the arrest should stick. If either of those do not apply, the man has a wrongful arrest claim.

I sincerely hope the arrest sticks. I feel kind of dirty favoring the use of rarely enforced laws to circumvent the first ammendment, but these are special circumstances.

True, but the fact that the ebook made Amazon's Top 100 list for a short period can pretty much guarantee that one ended up in the Florida.

I'm just curious as to why this judge isn't concerned enough to find out. I mean, if he truly means what he says, you'd think he'd have quite a beef with Amazon, who also profited and distributed the book. I'm pretty sure a judge can have Amazon reveal to him any purchases from the judge's state.

Not sure how this whole thing is going to stand up, either. The guy was already investigated by his local police and they didn't find any evidence of wrong doing.
