Solution: Frontal Lobotomy for everyone except a few "peaceful leaders."OK Lets face the reality when it comes to gun control in the US.
It simply is not going to change drastically one way or the other. Sure there will be some legislative tweaks of some of the laws and there will be some court challenges making some other minor changes, but basically the fact will remain that the majority of Americans who want a gun will be able to get one, some legally and some illegally but they will be able to have them.
Even if all the guns were banned overnight the logistics of removing the several hundred million guns currently in private hands would be significant. Just finding all of them would be a challenge and of course not all gun owners would give their guns up easily.
The real question is IMHO what could be done to change American society to one where gun usage was not as commonplace as it is today.
I believe that it will take a concentrated leadership effort on the part of leaders of all parts of society to change the culture to a much less violent one. The toning down of the political rhetoric would go a long way to demonstrating the necessary leadership as would having politicians undertake to abhor using gun metaphors and symbolism in future campaigns. Palin’s crosshairs and Obama’s gun metaphors are prime examples.
It will take a lot more than that as well. The root causes of crime would have to be dealt with. Currently harsh sentences is about the only consistent tool that Americans use to prevent crime and history shows that that does not work. I believe that a healthy economy in which all can participate would be a necessary step in the fight against violence in US society.
Drugs is also a major source of violence. Much crime associated with drugs would disappear quickly if there was a more rational response to drug use. Provide addicts with safe injection places and low cost drugs to deal with their habits. Combine this with addiction treatment programs and give the people something else to look forward to than their next fix.
The popular culture myth of the lone cowboy riding into town with his trusty six shooter would need to be modified. Why not have some Hollywood movies of a lone unarmed gunman who stands up to wrong by force of his personality and the use of logic and by peaceful methods wins the day?
This would be a major change in US culture but not one that would be totally unprecedented. Racial integration and harmony has come a long way since the days not that long ago of Jim Crow laws throughout much of the US, not being a raciest is not something that most people are proud of any more.
Gun violence will never be totally whipped out. Even countries with very low gun ownership rates and restrictive gun laws suffer from gun violence. The goal would be to reduce gun deaths to some point that they were manageable and tolerable.
The ideal would be to have a society where people no longer felt the need, either real or imagined, to own, possess and to carry lethal weapons with them daily.
How about any ideas? Remember the opening premise, gun control and regulations will not change very much, this is not a gun control thread as such but a thread on how to change US society to a less violent society where gun deaths decrease dramatically.
Human nature is ... human nature. There will always be violent people commiting violent acts against others (even lacking guns). Short of lobotomizing everyone, I don't see any real solutions. - Maybe put valium in everyones breakfast lunch and dinner ? ... a nicer way of lobotomizing
