Ed Schultz off MSNBC for vulgar criticism of Laura Ingraham

Ed Schultz off MSNBC for vulgar criticism of Laura Ingraham | StarTribune.com

NEW YORK - MSNBC's Ed Schultz is off the air for more than a week after calling a fellow talk-show host a vulgar term.

On his radio show, the liberal commentator from Fargo, N.D., referred to conservative host Laura Ingraham as a "right-wing slut." He was apparently upset over her criticism of President Barack Obama's overseas trip.

Schultz apologized on MSNBC on Wednesday to Ingraham, his family, MSNBC and viewers for the remark. He said it was wrong and uncalled for, and he recognized the severity of what he said.

MSNBC said the network and Schultz mutually agreed on a suspension that will take him off the air until June 6

And if it had been someone from FOX doing so to a liberal journalist it would be the lead story on every other network.

Really? Beck, Hannity, and O'Reilly do it every night.

I've never watched Beck and haven't watched Hannity since Alan Colmes was on the show with him, but I can assure you that, watching O'Reilly regularly, I've never seen him call anyone a slut or any other offensive term.

Care to provide us with some quotes?

Aside from the 'well, they do it' bullshit, I think Schultz deserves to be fired for this. Very demeaning and unprofessional!

Hannity was on the record last night saying he goes out of his way never to say anything like that and had a conservative said anything of the sort, he or she would have been fired othe spot.

No. Why bother. I have been down this road way too many times. Facts are of no use.

I do agree that Ed Schultz was wrong. I do agree that he should be suspended. I do not agree that he should be fired.

I also hope Fox News will take note and rein in some of the wild statements that come from there, but I realize that request falls on deaf ears.

I also believe that Ed Schultz made a sincere and heartfelt apology. While that does nothing to mitigate the offense, it does show that he recognizes that he screwed up big time.

Well, bless your heart! You make a statement and then can't back it up so we all know what that means!

Look up Beck's anti-semite rants. OK?

No, hon. You made the statement so you have to back it up. You said, "Beck, Hannity, and O'Reilly do it every night." I must admit that I haven't watch any of them in a couple of years but I'm sure I would have heard if they would have called a woman a "slut".

OK. You are right. I stand admonished. Ed Schultz is the only one who insults others.

It should be very easy for you to back up your claim by showing a quote of one of the folks you named calling someone a "slut" or something of a similar beyond-the-pale nature, had they done so, no? It is entirely possible that they have, but as you brought the claim the onus of documenting it is yours.

Seems like a reasonably appropriate response from MSNBC for a very uncalled for comment by Ed Schultz of Laura Ingraham. Not only does his comment destroy whatever point Ed Schultz was trying to make but it also does not look well for the show in general. Still though, seems like a good call on MSNBC's part. Why are some calling for a more harsh punishment?
