    My Review of Hunger Games

XavierPop » your source for the best in pop culture » @MovieJay Reviews The Hunger Games

The movie is winning favor with its fan-base, not surprisingly, and the reviews are generally good-not-great for this flick set in a dystopian North America where our nations have fallen into fascism in a state called Panem that is divided among 12 districts.

From a political perspective, I imagine the Occupiers will see what they want to see and that the Tea Partiers will choose to see what they want to see.

That's not really the point of the movie anyway, it's more of a futuristic parable meant as a warning to us today.

Hope you click and read my review and that we can hash this movie over once all you lovely folks have seen it. There's stuff to chew on here about society, fascism, celebrity culture, minors being forced to kill each other, etc.

Okay, I know this movie-from-a-book is aimed at teen girls, but it did score the 5th highest grossing weekend of all time last weekend, which means somebody here saw it than me.

C'mon folks, there's stuff in it for the Occupiers and the Teabaggers...

Get on it, cause we have to hash it over!

I didn't see it but my teen children did and they enjoyed it. My daughter absorbed the books when she discovered them and while the movie wasn't 100% on she thought it was still faithful.

It's a social horror story with a lot of deep criticism about society at large and the struggle to fit in and achieve even wwhen the deck is stacked against you and you had no impact on the rules of the game you are forced to play.

Here's a radical thought. Watch the movie for what it is, entertainment.

    Not terribly good entertainment though.

Sometimes, entertainment is just entertainment, and there isn't a need to force-fit it into a political box....

    Running man was better done.

I will say Woody Harrelson did a pretty good job in it though.

Solid plot, damn good acting, fight scenes held to minimum in order to expand on logical progression of one scene to the next.
Unfortunatley, I presume the second part will assume we have seen the first and will consist mostly of badly editted fight scenes.

Commercial success does not always mean quality, originality and especially political relevance. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is a very original work with a believable political subtext, but it got only a lukewarm reception in US cinema despite great success as both a book and foreign movie. Having not seen HG and not really intending to I can't make a real critique, but I do know that stuff like Twilight is popular due more to good marketing than anything about the politics of Vampires. One thing the review seems to indicate this movie lacks besides a new idea is a good reason WHY the populace is so easily "pacified" by watching random samples of their children being forced to kill each other. You might draw a parallel with "Bread and Circuses" I suppose, but the Romans largely made entertainment out of executing criminals and their enemies, not unfortunate members or offspring of the Mob they were trying to win over.
