Re: Ok .. Big Oil its time for gas to head back up now!

If Bush could lower and raise oil prices at will, why wouldn't he just come on TV and say "If you vote for Republicans, I'll drop gas prices by a dollar per gallon" and then do it for a few days to prove that he had this power?

And, what exactly do you think it is that he does to control the oil prices? Does he have a knob that he turns with readings from say $1.00 to $5.00? Does he have to make a phone call and have someone else do it? Does he hop on AF1 and go negotiate with Hugo Chavez and the Arabs?

The problem with your argument is that it's a logical fallacy. Concurrency doesn't imply causation. For instance, I could make the case that our elections happened yesterday because of oil prices and have an argument equally logically valid to yours (assuming, of course, that we left it at that).

If you're going go demonstrate that one thing cause another, you have to offer proof beyond the fact that they happened sequentially (or close together). If it's raining every time I leave my house, am I causing rain somehow?

You're exactly right ... too bad you didn't do any research:

Oil prices rise above $60 barrel

NEW YORK - Oil prices rose above $60 a barrel Wednesday, as traders assessed declines in U.S. gasoline and diesel fuel inventories and the possibility of further OPEC production cuts.

If you a person who reads and listens to the news, you would have read around a month ago that one of the OPEC countries (I think Saudi Arabia) was going to curtail production to drive up the prices. Hardly Bush's doing.

Funny, gas dropped a little lower here.

Well I think it was Bill Frist who was saying the lowering gas prices were due to the enegy bill congress passed last year. Guess he was full of shit.

Also I wouldn't underestimate the power of the government to manipulate oil prices. I'll let you read the article and judge for yourself.

Quote:
Prince Bandar enjoys easy access to the Oval Office. His family and the Bush family are close. And Woodward told 60 Minutes that Bandar has promised the president that Saudi Arabia will lower oil prices in the months before the election - to ensure the U.S. economy is strong on election day.

Woodward says that Bandar understood that economic conditions were key before a presidential election: “They’re [oil prices] high. And they could go down very quickly. That's the Saudi pledge. Certainly over the summer, or as we get closer to the election, they could increase production several million barrels a day and the price would drop significantly.”
