House Quietly Votes to Raise Taxes

The House passed HR 1906 which raises taxes on the rich in order to pay for getting two more Democrat votes in the form of DC and Utah. These people have to be paid, so the Dems put forth a bill to increase taxes on those making 5 million or more anually. Still to be seen what the Senate will do, and the White House is against it, but it doesnt bode well that the House is planning on raising taxes to support every notion they have.

Quote:
Taxing the Rich

The tax bill would more than offset the estimated $400,000 a year required to pay salaries and benefits to two more members of Congress.

According to a preliminary estimate, the bill would generate $14 million through fiscal 2017 by slightly boosting — by 0.1 percent — the required estimated tax payments for taxpayers earning more than $5 million annually.

Democratic leaders split the revenue-raising provisions into a separate bill because incorporating the offsets into the District of Columbia bill had previously given Republicans a chance to blindside the majority.

An earlier version of the legislation (HR 1433) was sidetracked in March after a GOP move to add language to repeal the District’s ban on semiautomatic weapons and prohibit the District government from passing new gun-control measures. The revenue-raising provisions had made that move germane.

All involved thought the move would have succeeded if legislative leaders had not abruptly pulled the bill from the floor.

Taking no chances the second time around, the leadership both went with a two-bill strategy and pushed through a rule for debate (H Res 317) that waived House pay-as-you-go budget rules.

Re: House Quietly Votes to Raise Taxes

House votes to raise taxes on people with annual incomes of 5 million dollars or more.
A total of 14 million dollars will be raised.
Under your fanciful notion of economics, does this doom the economy?

Re: House Quietly Votes to Raise Taxes

Why should they tax the rich like this. That is just class envy and using taxes to impose some sort of undue punishment.

Does the government need that much more money? Why raise the taxes if the money is not truly needed?

Re: House Quietly Votes to Raise Taxes

Why not? Progressive taxes are good. We've been swinging way too far towards regressive taxes.

Plus, it's not like the Democrats said, "hey, let's create a couple of new representative seats." Those seats have to be paid for somehow.

Simple, all the congresspeople take a slight pay cut. Just like pro sports teams do, to stay under salary caps.

As for why not? Would you really be ok with being told that EMT's must pay an extra 5% annually simply because they are EMT's?

Shit, man, when I started as an EMT I qualified for food stamps working 50 hours/week. There wasn't anything to tax.

I'm not like a lot of people - even though I'm in school to get my MBA, and expect to (hopefully) be making a fair amount of money in the future, I'm not against being taxed on that income, if the money is being spent at least reasonably well. If I'm making $5,000,000 per year and see a 1/2 of 1% increase in taxes to pay for a Constitutionally mandated increase in the size of the house of representatives, I'd be OK with it.

Um yeah? We have a deficit in the trillions and a war costing 100s of billions every year. We need 124 BILLION for this next war appropriations bill alone. Bush refuses to put this war in the budget and keeps asking the congress for 100s of billions more all the time.

Yes, I think the government needs the money, obviously.

Unless you want to keep borrowing from the Chinese.

Your father was worried we'd all have to speak German remember?

I'm worried we'll all have to speak Chinese. Or maybe Saudi Arabic.

Ahh, so you wouldn't have liked it.

Well, then lets tax people that aren't paying taxes or cut congress's salaries. But to simply tax people simply because they are "rich" is nothing but "classism" and using taxes as punishment for success. Secondly, if you're so concerned, then send all the money that you have left over at the end of the month, to the government. Or don't cash your refund check. Do your part.

Why are you afraid of that? Do you hate them or something? That sounds pretty racist to me, Samantha.

Oh! come on now, do you honestly think that is why they passed the bill?

or could it be that they have started to figure that the taxes have been too low on the super-rich?
