Exxon gets a break

Now this must be nice..

Court slashes judgment in Exxon Valdez disaster

Exxon by law needed to put money aside for this award years ago while it was in the court system... and just how much did they make while it was setting there?

So now 15,000 over what 18 years? is how much?

Long live our new system of government.!!!!

Re: Exxon gets a break

relax folks.

They should have that tallied as to what folks would have earned if the spill had not occurred etc.

The award was to big because, like it or not, its meant as a punishment since it was never proven exxon acted with malice. I think they should be made to pay for every single dollar that region lost and every single dollar necessary to resurrect the area etc. for sure.

There is still oil on the beachs, not all of it was cleaned up.

Not all of the fisherman where able to get on to work for the clean up, then when the clean up was "finished" it has taken years and still continues for the fish to come back to pre spill numbers.

Actual damages are one thing, but the lost income because of the actions of a company.

Best hope that a corp in your area does not do something like what Exxon did here or you too will have the same out come.

Re: Exxon gets a break

The problem is that there was a large chorus of people at the time who cried that Exxon should be fined out of business. That would've been supremely stupid.

The award was far too large, and it's good to see smart and reasonable people saw it that way...

it is good news from the standpoint of all those who love the idea that oil companies deserve every chance thay can get to make a profit...

to hell with the environment... who needs it?

to hell with the workers, who cares about them, certainly not the oil company execs...

birds? they're just birds... to hell with them, too...

the oil companies NEED to be able to rake in billions and billions and billions of dollars...

they're not in business to give any of it back just because they made a mistake...

What about it?

This, from the piece you linked to:

The possibility of continuing low level chronic effects of the Exxon Valdez oil spill seem very real now, although measurable population effects would be very difficult to detect in wild populations.

So they say that the possibility seems very real, but then admit that it would be very difficult to test for.

Should we be willing to fine Exxon into oblivion on the possibility that something might happen?
