I bet your mom remembers when nursing was hands on and not a bunch of governmental paperwork!
After the nurse killed my husband, I let my license lapse (though I can renew it) because I thought, "What if I did something like that to a patient? How could I live with myself?" I just don't have it in me anymore to take care of patients...

Re: How Secure Is Your Job?

I'm an artsy, so I look at instability and uncertainty as something I can count on and be quite certain about. Self reliance was always a big deal for me through my life, so I've refused to be one of those "starving artists" who think that regular work is beneath them or something.

To give a snapshot of the last 6 months to you, I've been in two short films, one Shakespeare play, dome some singing work, have worked two different restaurant jobs(one as an expeditor, the other a fine dining server), have taught acting and tutored writing, been a part-time tour guide, and have worked on a community farm outfit.

I like variety and people anyway, so it suits me just fine. I'm the only one in the entire family that operates this way. Like a bohemian. I think it might have something to do with the fact that I was brought up in a very sort of regimented life, and it continued even in school and college, where I sort of used to get that "staring at the clock" feeling because of the "have to" of it all. I just felt like there was something else out there. And there really was!

Of course, that was during the middle ages, and the job security has increased since then.
Maybe not that much, John Paul I only lasted 33 days in 1978.

Id laugh pretty hard if all you conservatives lost your jobs and became homeless.

That'd be awesome.

Yeah. It's about the same as freelance writing I guess.

I know a lot of people who make their living with their cameras. Most of them around here are wedding photographers. That's just way too stressful for me.

I do, primarily, concert photography. While it can pay well, those good paying gigs are few and far between, and I don't know anyone who makes a living doing only that.

Last September, I was paid $600.00 to shoot The Temptations for ten minutes, and then to shoot some casual backstage and hospitality room stuff. If I could pull a gig like that three or four times a week, I think I'd have to give up the day job...

Probably, she was working as a nurse from the early 70's to late 80's. She did mostly OB/GYN nursing, which is frequently happy, and also worked in the preemie ward and NICU, whcih is often not so much. When I was in high school she went to law school, and then worked for the board of physicians, investigating doctors who had complaints against them. I think she saw too many bad doctors when she worked as a nurse, and wanted to be in a position to do something about it. Now she's retired friom that, but teaching medical law to nursing students, which she seems to enjoy.

I graduated nursing school in 1980 and at the time it was hands on nursing so yes, your mom would know what I'm talking about. I started in ER but requested a move to peds, which I loved. I also worked in OB/GYN but after carrying a 9 lb. 12 oz. baby and then spending 16 hours in labor before my c-section, I just didn't have much sympathy for women crying for pain pills every two hours after spitting out a 6 lb. baby! I also work geriatrics and that's when the paperwork really got bad. Because most of the people had Medicare, the documentation was horrific...guess that's what happens when the government steps in.
Good for your mom though! Too many doctors (and nurses for that matter) get away with making stupid judgment calls and there's just too few attorneys willing to take malpractice suits. I had to get one in New Orleans because most of the ones in my city are tied to the hospital in one way or another. I'm sure with a nursing background, it made your mom a much better medical lawyer than most.

Thanks; appreciate it.

Like I said, I would love to be able to pick up enough of those gigs to do concert photography full time. Unfortunately, they're just not out there...
