"May you live in interesting times." Quite the appropriate curse these days.

The company where I work has a pretty cool CEO. She sends out regular "letters from the road;" the latest version discussed decisions that the company had made in its posture before this crisis started to unfold. It's nice to see that there are at least some companies that took intelligent approaches to their financing and are now in a position to weather this storm.

Yep. My CEO did the same thing. Purged unnecessary inventories, phased out old technology, and invested in the future with our surpluses.

What do expect? an orderly and logical increase of exactly 10% per year? Face it. Investing in equities is risky business. And as the disclaimers say: You may lose money. However, the risk you take in the stock market is a compensated risk - over time you are compensated for the risk by a potentially higher return than "riskless assets" offer. IF you want a garauntee buy a Treasury bond!

If you want a guarantee, invest in a company that's "too big to fail."

The face value can, yes. But the coupon rate is the same for the life of the bond. Of course there is the mattress.....

Re: Here we go again...stocks falling all day

Of course, burying the stash of cash does not protect againts inflation. The $1 buried in 1970 would fill a car with a tank of gas, dig it up 40 years later and it buys a quart or so.

My dad's father hid money in the basement, down in the space inside the concrete block walls. After he passed away, pop spent a day or two looking for it, it was never found. This stash depreciated to $0.
