Mulally being the 153rd highest paid CEO means there are roughly 150 CEO's out there being ridiculously overpaid. I'll give the benefit of the doubt to a few of them that they're worth their pay.

I have been surrounded by the UAW all my life.
There are (correction - there WERE) 4 automobile plants within 70 miles of here - 2 in my town alone.
A Ford Plant here closed 2 years ago...3 times daddio...3 times Ford tried to negotiate with the UAW, the last time they outright said they would close the plant...they STILL went on strike.
The rest is history.
And what was the big thing?
1) Reduced pension for new employees only
2) Higher deductible and premiums for health insurance
3) Lower wages for new employees only (starting wage of $10 instead of $14)

Ford was trying to reduce labor cost in a very hard market...and Ford was making little to no money....Gosh they must be evil.

Unfortunately this can only end bad for Ford now that they have to comepete with Government Motors, who can now use the law and guns to encourage you to get a GM. Dont be surprised when theres a special tax credit for buying a GM, or GM is exempt from federal taxes, or regulations make it anything but GM able to produce. Ford would then move overseas I bet.

I doubt Ford ever leaves America, even though I argued when it looked like they too would go bankrupt, that they should split themselves into two corporations, North American Ford and World Ford, although four divisions might be better, European, South American, Asian, and North America. As a split up company the stockholders would fare better as North America was the market bringing them down.

They still haven't turned the corner as they're increasing debt even as we speak. But, through careful management, it looks like their survival is no longer in question for the intermediate period (3-5 years).

GM emerged from bankruptcy with less debt (which is always the benefit of Chapter 11). But it's intermediate period doesn't look that great.

One thing yu guys seem to be forgetting is that gm had strong sales durign the cash for clunkers period as well. And that GM is still an american car maker, more american than ford indeed.

Also one reason ford has gotten better in their quality is that they are using a lot of technology they bought from toyota. Their hybrid dive is just toyota's old one.

And at the end of the day they are still a ford. Which means no matter how cheap they get they are still overpriced crap.

There seems to be a lot of Ford hater-aid being drunk in this thread! Surely, Ford can't be THAT bad can it? I'm not gonna knock them on the quality of their vehicles! I however, will say that they have done well for themselves during this depression!

Ford deserves nothing. Gm sales are up, people are realizing that Ford is still a Ford no matter what they have done or tried to do which means they are nothing much special. And all they are doing with their latest round of updates is following the trend set by toyota, honda, and gm technologically speaking. Ford doesnt innovate tey imitate and they are quite effective about that.

Apparently they know a whole hell of a lot more about the car business than you do, since people are buying their products and they are making money.

Yeah whatever Matt. I know that I have worked in the car business been around long enough to see that Fords have never been innovative or anythign beyond blah, bleah and boring. The reason they are making money is they are able to manipulate and take advantage of situations better. Not that they have any moral or social upstanding or better tehnology or autos. They also dropped the bigger Suvs sooner than the other companies did. They are also dropping a lot of the big V8s and getting on the green bandwagon which is a big help to them as they may actually someday achieve the quality of the japanese cars.
