Interesting that you should bring that up. People forget just how liberal & progressive Republicans were at one time. Today's Republican Party would reject most of the great Republicans of the past. I'd suspect today's Republicans would even spit out Ronald Reagan.

One feature that I happen to remember is that all bridges were built far enough apart so that one ordinary bomb or shell could not destroy both bridges, Another feature was that every bridge has a emergency roadway built beside it so that Army Engineers could quickly move traffic over temporary bridges and not have to do any dirt work to build access roads. Even today, if you look, you will see that at every bridge there is a roadway down to the river, or whatever that the bridge is spanning.
