A bit off topic, but their (Pajamas Media) guesstimate of the numbers at the rally are pretty ridiculous.
Pajamas Media So, How Much Sanity Was There in D.C. Yesterday? (Updated)On the other side of the Mall, the crowd seems to be roughly up to the end of the National Air and Space Museum:
It took me quite awhile of crowd pushing just to get to the Air and Space Museum coming from the direction of the Washington Monument (the Myth Busters guys took the stage right about the time I finally got to the museum). That's also backed up by this picture:
"Rally to Restore Sanity," Marine Corps Marathon, Halloween and more in the day in photos
For those unfamiliar, the Air and Space museum is the building with the black glass middle directly across in that picture. The crowd clearly extends well beyond it.

But if we don't practice these tough habits of thought, we cannot hope to solve the truly serious problems that face us -- and we risk becoming a nation of suckers, up for grabs by the next charlatan who comes along." -Carl Sagan

Yea, that seems about the best that we'll get, they were 'comparable'. I am a bit suspicious of the numbers CBS put out, though. I understand that they use an outside company to get their attendance figures, but it's a bit difficult for me to just dismiss the fact that they're owned by Viacom, the same company that owns Comedy Central. 215,000 does seem like a reasonable number for the Sanity Rally, but from the pictures I've seen of the Beck rally, 87,000 seems a bit on the low side.
Either way, the number of people that attended either rally means absolutely nothing in the end, really. People will of course think the attendance numbers are a reflection of the popularity of the message at each rally, but I think that's reading into it a bit much. People have their own reasons for attending a rally and to "support the message" is but one of many. Especially in this case, where the two rallies were quite different in purpose.

Wht does the left hate anyone or anything that has accumulated great wealth? It doesn't seem to matter how may lives have been positively affected by the corp of products, they focus on the wealth and hate it with every cell.
Take a good hard look, it's coming.

So at least they're not too overly partisan and bitter about the event being a success. However, their faith in a guy who estimates crowd size by area covered while neglecting crowd density leaves a lot to be said. There is a lot of good to say about the experience of being crammed in a crowd of good-natured people.
Here's the quote from the guy who did the size estimate they seem to like so much:

From Speakeasy's photo, that looks to be very much the case, and Speakeasy already debunks that the crowd only went 'up to' the air-and space museum. In other words, to reach 215,000, the people would have to be packed in about two to a beach towel, over the entire polygon, including all the space occupied by those buildings.
Make your own decisions, but I don’t find that in the least plausible.
In other words, Charlie Martin's crowd estimate fails.
The “Rally” was NOT a political event. It was a commercial event dreamed up by an entertainment corporation to boost the profile and profits generated by its two political satirists.
While there were political overtones it was a for profit entertainment event. Trying to analyse the meaning of this event like it was a political event is foolish.
Comedy Central wanted to limit the filming so that they would not dilute their ability to sell the DVD and other products from the event.
I always find it strange that only reasonable people agree with me.
