I am genuinely sorry to say that isn't looking too good. From Dr. Masters' blog:

Quote:
The latest 12Z (8am EDT) model runs are in, and they portray a conflicting picture of what may happen. Three of the four major global models--UKMET, GFS, and NOGAPS--dissipate or severely weaken the storm by Monday. The Canadian model, which has been the most aggressive in making Ernesto a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, now keeps the system a weak tropical storm all the way to landfall in the Florida Panhandle on Tuesday. The European Center model has a similar forecast. Oddly, the large upper-level trough of low pressure over the central Caribbean is forecast by these models to move west away from Ernesto, and an upper level high pressure system to build on top of the storm. This situation should act to lower the shear and aid in intensification, and that it what the official NHC forecast is calling for. It is unusual for the models to forecast a favorable shear environment, yet dissipate a storm, and serves to show the limitations of these models in making hurricane intensity forecasts. I have very little confidence in any of the Ernesto intensity forecasts--including the official NHC forecast of a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday. High wind shear could still destroy this storm on Sunday. Ernesto should slowly intensify through Saturday, but beyond that, I have no idea. It's best to prepare for the worst, and hope for the best. All portions the U.S. coast from the Florida Keys to Brownsville, Texas are at risk from this storm.

Given the high degree of uncertainty in Ernesto's intensity, those of you traveling to or from Jamaica, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and Cancun should play "wait and see" as long as you can. At this point, it is likely that Jamaica, eastern Cuba, and southwest Haiti will get tropical storm conditions on Sunday. Jamaica's airports will probably close about 2am Sunday, and remain closed into late Sunday night. Ernesto probably does not have enough time to intensify to a hurricane before reaching Jamaica. Airports in the Cayman Islands will probably close by late morning on Sunday, and reopen Monday afternoon. Ernesto could be a Category 1 hurricane for the Caymans.

I hope he's wrong, dude, but it's not looking so good.

No doubt, Ernesto is already our first hurricane in the Atlantic this season, it'd suck if it becomes our first fatal one too. That there about looks like the place Charley destroyed in 2004 (maybe a little further up). Of course we wont know the track till the last two days, but either way you cut it could be bad. We'll see.

Once it hits that hot Gulf water it could get huge. We really must start doing the things that can cool this planet back down. If the average temperature rises JUST 5 degrees, the earth will be unrecognizable to us.

As much as I agree on your view of climate change I do not think this thread was started for that discussion.

Since when has that stopped Sam. Actually for that matter since when has that stopped any of us.

Hmmm. Is the Gulf hotter than the mid-Atlantic?

No doubt. How dare this planet change into something that makes us uncomfortable? The nerve.

Re: Hurricane Season: Crickets Chirping

Ooh, good news! ^.^ Ernesto has slowed to 7 mphs, weakened as far as pressure goes 1004 mb (As I said before, pressure is a measure of strength of a storm), and winds are down to 50 mph (So its no longer a hurricane). What I see happening is it weakening even more, after all its going to go over land when it reaches Cuba and hopefully that means it wont be able to gain enough strength to do any real harm once it reaches the states (Matts illustration that he posted earlier from that weather site should more or less show you exactly that). The worse thing that can happen at this moment is that it goes towards the gulf, but I don't think thats going to happen. So, hopefully that means we can write Ernesto off (Not that I'm saying we should just yet, but one can hope).

Re: Hurricane Season: Crickets Chirping

You go ahead and do that Speedyer. It's about to hit 90F water and it's a little closer to me than to you. My office is pretty far south but if the hurricans stays on the eastern side of the peninsula we should be OK.

Even if it hits head on as a category 1, I will sit tight.

Today is the day to load up on gas and water just in case. Maybe examine the plywood and tools, crank up the generator once... wouldn't hurt.

I was a little more worried early yesterday. Let's hope it leans a little furthe east and we can all say "whew".

and here is a picture of a hurricane that turned around:

Tropical Storm Ernesto Discussion Number 15

Statement as of 5:00 am EDT on August 28, 2006

...
If Ernesto emerges sooner and a little
farther north off the coast of Cuba...then the cyclone will have
more time to strengthen over very warm SSTs of 86-88f and in a very
favorable upper-level flow regime. The SHIPS intensity model is
forecasting near-zero vertical wind shear...just as Ernesto is
approaching the southern Florida Peninsula in 48 hours. These
conditions would favor the possibility of Ernesto becoming a
category 2 or even a category 3 hurricane before making landfall
along the Florida coast.
Forecast positions and Max winds
forecaster Stewar

Still too early to decide.

Sheesh, I didn't say that they couldn't turn around, I said that they couldn't go backwards from a set point. ^.^ Or at least thats what I meant. O.O As for Ernesto, things are looking even better, its projected to go further east and has weakened some more. As for a catagory 1, not really life threatening as long as you don't be a idiot. Though it sucks that they have to scrub the launch of Atlantis, darnit!
Right now though we can say "whew", a catagory 3 is nothing to play around in, and thankfully we're not going to have one. Instead we're going to have a little wind, a little rain, and nothing ya can't live through if your not an idiot. ^.^ After all, water is what kills most people during hurricanes. Of course, I'm probably living in the safest place in Florida, with the way nothing hits us. While it may be out a good bit, I'm not saying we should write this storm off just yet, just that so far its looking pretty good for a almost non-threatening pass at us.
