Clean running Prius fails car pollution test?

CNN has a link to a video story about the clean running Prius failing a pollution test.

Has anyone seen this?

Here's the link: http://www.cnn.com/video/player/play...d.emission.wsb

Right now, they only have the story in video form.

The short version is that the Prius isn't failing due to it's emissions, but because the test is not configured to account for a hybrid. Of course, the simple thing to do would be to grant an automatic waiver to hybrids, but try getting a simple solution like that past a state bureaucracy....

easy there tex, I told you where the link was. I guess I could've given the CNN.com - Breaking News, U.S., World, Weather, Entertainment & Video News, I'm sorry.

Thank you Matt for posting the link. I was having problems trying to link to it.

I suspect it'd be because the engine shuts off.

There's a starting sequence you use to keep the engine on, regardless of speed.

Re: Clean running Prius fails car pollution test?

The Prius fails because the gasoline engine shuts off (like it is supposed to) before the test can complete.

HOWEVER...I saw in another report that the Prius is the most environmentally irresponsible car manufactured today.
It does more environmental damage than a hummer.

Primarily because the batteries are make of nickel-cadmium. The production of nickel smelting is extremely damaging to the environment.

Indeed, it will only get worse as 10-15 years from now - what will be done with 1,000 of tons of spent batteries containing this metal?

Ahhhh, I did not know that. I don't know if that's the reason they gave, I can not watch the video at work.

Actually, they're NiMH, not Ni-Cd. Both types of batteries are easily recycled.

That "research" with a comparison to an H2 is erroneous.

It's kind of a funny thing to get used to. Even a traffic light is long enough for the engine to quit. When it starts back up, it's interesting because there's no starter windup; it just turns on again like someone had hit the pause button.

Stealth mode (no gasoline engine) is fun for sneaking up on people in parking garages. The European model has a mode that allows you to override the hybrid system and run (for a short period of time at limited speeds) exclusively on the electric motor.

YUP, and that would be funny if it wasn't so pitiful. Just shows Governmental ineptness.

Except when they hit you. Read my other post about geting hit by one that was backing out and I did not hear it. I find it funny, since I did not get hurt.
