Science holds the key

yes its scientific advances that has got us where we are today, in terms of enabling us to wreak havoc on our planet - but its science that also holds the answers. In this article, Sir David King talks about why young people should look towards a scientific career ...

Quote:
Sir David King

The environmental problems facing the world in the 21st Century are the legacy of human activities, argues Sir David King. But he says, in this week's Green Room, we also hold the key to solving these problems by attracting the brightest young minds into the world of science.

Mankind has never had a greater need for science, and for the spark of human ingenuity to apply this to tackling today's great global challenges.

Built on centuries of tradition and endeavour, the UK is second to none in the diversity and excellence of its scientific heritage.

Our nation punches well above its weight in the quality and number of academic papers and citations, above Germany, France and Japan, and trailing only the far bigger economy of the US.

It is vital therefore that we pay equal regard to ensuring that the UK's outstanding scientific outputs flow through to enhance the quality of life and prosperity for people in the UK, and beyond.

The challenges facing science, and humanity, as we move through the 21st Century are manifold. I would place none higher than the test we face in our stewardship of planet Earth.

Even with our best efforts, we must be prepared for further global temperature rise as a result of past emissions

It is a stern test, as demonstrated by a few stark facts. From around three billion people on the planet in 1950, global population has risen to over six billion today. By the middle of this century, it will exceed nine billion.

Most future population growth will be in the developing world, where people quite reasonably aspire to the living standards enjoyed today by "western societies", such as our own.

Yet it is estimated that, even with today's population, we would need the resources of three planets for people across the world to imitate western lifestyles.

Nah, man holds the key. Science is but a method, a tool. A wrench doesn't hold the key to anything, only the one using it does.

Re: Science holds the key

well yes, you are right ... but at the moment I keep seeing people not even prepared to think about whether that tool could be useful ...

It seems to me like the house is falling down ... and we've got people here who are saying - the walls are still standing - so what if there's a drip from the roof when it rains?

but the thing is we needed hammer and nails to build our house - if we picked up the hammer we might be able to repair the roof, and start looking around to fix other problems before our house falls to pieces ...

but we have to be prepared to pick up the hammer ... otherwise the whole thing WILL come crashing down around our ears ... OK ... maybe not OUR ears - maybe our children's ears ... but when I was a kid I learnt that a stitch in time saves nine ... and it will be easier for us to start repairing the house now rather than leave it to the kids who will have to replace the entire roof ... when the job might really be too big to deal with.

Re: Science holds the key

It may be geographic. We don’t have pollution in Florida which gives us a different mindset, we don’t even have emission testing for cars…
The photos paraded in front of you were stagiest. It’s only double digit cities that even have pollution, that’s out of millions around the world.

You're kidding me man! Florida doesn't have pollution? I'm so sad about the ignorance among my fellow citizens, if I don't laugh, I'll cry.

Click a link Hank, please don't stay that way.

Re: Science holds the key

LOL Hank. Sorry bro but you only have 3 cities in the top 20 of cities with the least long term particulates. That would mean pollution exists in Fla.

However, here in N.M. we have 3 cities in the top 10.

From WebMD.com

1. Cheyenne, Wyo.
2. Santa Fe-Espanola, N.M.
3. Honolulu
4. Great Falls, Mont.
5. Tucson, Ariz.
6. Anchorage, Alaska
7. Farmington, N.M.
7. Bismark, N.D.
9. Albuquerque, N.M.
10. Rapid City, S.D.
11. Pueblo, Colo.
12. Fort Collins-Loveland, Colo.
12. Fargo-Wahpeton, N.D.-Minn.
12. Duluth, Minn.-Wis.
15. Salinas, Calif.
15. Midland-Odessa, Texas
17. Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville, Fla.
18. Colorado Springs, Colo.
18. Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Fla.
18. Albany-Corvallis-Lebanon, Ore.
21. Reno-Sparks, Nev.
22. Redding, Calif.
22. Port St. Lucie-Fort Pierce, Fla.
24. Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Goleta, Calif.
25. San Luis Obispo-Paso Robles, Calif.

Here's a list of the worst.

1. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Riverside, Calif.
2. Bakersfield, Calif.
3. Pittsburgh-New Castle, Pa.
4. Visalia-Porterville, Calif.
5. Fresno-Madera, Calif.
6. Detroit-Warren-Flint, Mich.
7. Hanford-Corcoran, Calif.
8. Cleveland-Akron-Elyria, Ohio
9. Birmingham-Hoover-Cullman, Ala.

Looks like you californians are screwing it up for everybody.

Re: Science holds the key

I would never trust the bureaucratic institution to do anything but use science to further destroy the planet. Science might indeed have potential to do wonderful things, but the elites will never ever use science to do anything but enrich themselves.
